OK here;s one for you ..Last Night EXTREMELY SLOW ..I mean DEAD
maybe due to the World Series as this bars cable company DID NOT CARRY THE WORLD SERIES ..ANYWAY

I was planning on going early but a table of singers came in and the owner said to stay to about 12:30am..no problem ABout 12:15 another few singers came in and the owner said to stay to regular time 1:00am ... Since there were only about 5 singers there I made about 6 annoucements for last call for Karaoke and that the show was over at 1:00 AM .... 2 people who usally sing go out to smoke about 12:50 and come back in at 1:00 as I'm tearing down and ask and beg to sing a song........... I look at him with disgust and say .... I've been announcing for the last 20 minutes to get your songs in and you decided to SMOKE than sing... SORRY DUDE NEXT WEEK arggghhh

Toqer you're an absolute technical wiz! One thing though, would your current employer view you running another karaoke show so close by as something that could potentially make their crowds smaller?

I doubt it. We're packed to capacity every weekend. We also limit everyone to 2 songs in queue, and despite this we still get booked up enough where we can't take anymore requests around 10:30.

The Mexican restaurant only has a beer/wine license, so we'd still be the only spot with mixed drinks, shots, etc.

At the end of the day, I've been here 9 years. The owners take my word as gold now, so I don't think they'll have any issues with it.

I get this every Friday night. Thing is, I wouldn't mind going over to 1:45, which would be the easiest thing, but the bar makes me shut down at 1:30, on the dot. I get the security guys in my face pointing at their watches every time at 1:20 (even though I have already planned things out, and have for three years at the same venue. Jackasses. Anyway...) I tell the whiners that it is illegal for me to play music after 1:30, but if they are willing to pay the thousands of dollars fine we will get from the city if we are caught going over, then by all means, go for it. I also tell them to get in touch with City Council and try to repeal the fine. I then tell them to go complain to the owner, which they do, always to no avail, and I get kind of a evil little chuckle from doing this.

lol I would get a giant play watch and put it on at 1:20 and show them I can tell time.

Maybe I should have been a little more sarcastic in my response, that was the intent and I missed it.

In reality, I do have that same problem and it is usually for one or two people that will walk in in the last half hour of my show and drop 3 or 4 slip on me and I simply tell them that I will work them in for probably only 1 song if possible and i will not drop one of my singers that has been there all night sitting patiently through 2 or 3 rotations. I usually run over 5 or 10 minutes if it a large rotation but if it is a slow night, which is usually more tiring than a busy one (go figure) I shut down on time. You have to be a good diplomat with your singers so they will continue to return night after night.

My Apologies to you then Rum! Didn't sense any sarcasm.

I guess i've met too many djs and kjs that think the world of themselves and don't handle their businesses professionally or responsibly.

No apologies needed, sometimes it is hard to envoke emotions or humor when you type, no harm no foul. :D

I had the same problem again this week, but alas thanks to your replies I finished exactly when I should. I made plenty of announcements "if you wish to sing please let me know shortly as time is ticking" and then assuming they would demand to sing, I allowed 10 minutes extra when I said I had no time for any more singers. One person instantly changed their song for PBTDBL and once again the group decided now was the time to sing. I skipped out the door on time and everybody is friends. :D

Had they not chosen to sing, I could have easily filled the 10 minutes just by following rotation and allowing two others an extra song. So for me it seems the answer to the question is to use my psychic powers.
