The Native Instruments Audio 2 sounds appealing, but appears to lack any inputs.

That's a deal breaker for me since I from time to time record singers or excerpts from my show for promotional purposes. A kind of 'air check' to borrow a term from the broadcast industry.

I'd have to spring for the $199 Audio 4 unit to get the recording capabilities.

To be honest, i'd have to A/B my UCA200 with one and it would have to be an incredible sound quality difference to justify spending $200.

I record outta my Mackie board. But I know what you mean. To each his own I guess.

As far as the item being made of plastic; I mounted mine on the mixer with velcro. No need to ever move it around and it gets the same protection as the mixing board. So, as far as unit safety, it's not an issue.

I use a variety of different cards...

My main rig uses an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R. 8x8 with 8 software returns and the ability to do low latency monitoring on the fly. I've actually dumped my mixer and used this on one occasion just to prove it could be done with low latency monitoring. ;)

I'm kicking around the idea of trying a ProFire 2626 though... The flexible routing option on this card would offer a lot more flexibility.

If I need to record it all depends...

I can use the Zoom R24, the Mackie Onyx 1620 w/ firewire card, or a couple other devices I have lying around...

But for high gain - the M-Audio Conectiv has great outputs. 16-bit... but the levels are some of the highest I've seen (unbalanced only).

I'm new to the idea of the USB audio interface, but all the literatures say it's for feeding signal INTO the laptop for recording purposes.

But it sounds like you guys are using it as a second or replacement sound card for signal OUTPUT from the laptop then? What's the main advantage over the onboard soundcard from the laptop? Better sound? Or more "longevity" compared to the laptop's headphone processor?

You need to look for one that says I/O interface. Input/Output. My Lexicon does both recording (input) & playback (output as a sound card) as do most others.
Main advantage over a headphone output, fuller/richer/cleaner sound - if you like your sound now running through a headphone jack, do an A/B comparison & you'll be wondering why you haven't been using one all along.

OK, so I picked up the Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ. Previously, I've been also using a UCA202 like Mr. Scott and others here. Well let me tell you, the difference is amazing. I can't believe the sound quality of the NI. Listening to the same music I've played a million times is like listening to brand new music. I'm hearing things I've never heard before. I'm hearing instruments on the tracks that I didn't know were there. Wow! The headroom and clarity of this little unit is outstanding. There is no noise and this little unit rocks. I'm glad I made the jump.

Mr. Scott, remember when you made the move from your Behringer mixer to the Yamaha and you were able to tell a big difference? Well, if you are still using the UCA202, you're cutting yourself short. Upgrade to this NI box and I'm sure you'll be blown away using it with your Yamaha.

I guessed I have missed out on a lot of posts,,hehe,, Thanks Alan for the good advice. Yeah, I'm still using the UCA202, sounds like you made a good upgrade. I just might have to do something similar. I totally am pleased with the Yamaha board, I'm learning to run it much better now too. If the changes are as big as they say you are with the USB interface changes, then for sure I will be looking at a change myself. Again, thanks for the heads up.
