Hi all,
First...forgive me if this is not the appropriate forum for this question and feel free to move it at will.
A friend of mine is looking at karaoke machines for her teenage son. She is wondering about the SongStation set-up.
I don't know anything about it really, do any of you? And would you recommend it for a fledgling, at home, karaoke wanna be?
And if not, why not? And if you have any opinions you'd be willing to share.....what would you get for a first timer?
Thank you in advance for your consideration Oh wise Karaoke God-types. (how's that for suckin up?)

Didn't find the Songstation, but MY recommendation would be to go on Ebay, there is a Memorex all-in -one machine. Brand NEW, I think the bidding is like 74.95, or buy it now for $99.00 and $30.00 shipping. The model is MKS8590 (not mentioned is add). This is a great home unit, you can record, play keyboard, guitar, mp3. I've owned one, and given them for gifts, and NEVER had a complaint. This is just MY opinion.

If you do check out the unit I suggested, I'd forget the bidding, and just do the buy it now. It's still worth it. These models have been discontinued, but have way more options than the ones out now. Also, the quality is better.

You will be lucky to find anyone here that knows the SongStation.
It is not the sort of thing we would use.

At $197 you can't go wrong.
Just be aware they are not legal.

Agreed, they're offering you over 50,000 karaoke tracks for under $200 USD, there's no way those are licensed tracks. So you do purchase at your own risk. That said, if you're only using it for home use, the chances of there being any real problem from that are pretty low.
I also question the quality of the tracks. I know they give you their samples and they do sound halfway decent, but to fit 50,000+ tracks on a single DVD is impossible with 128 kbps MP3's (considered minimal quality). The old SCDG's which were also DVD media only held a max of around 1000 songs (give or take). But again, for home use I'm not sure it would matter.

That was my first thought, but listening to the samples they didn't sound like midi. Of course it was a low quality YouTube video so if the instrumentation was good enough it would be hard to tell over that quality of audio.

Q: Can the machine play CD+G karaoke discs?
A: Yes, the player will read and play CD+G formatted CDs, as well as normal Karaoke DVDs. However it should be noted that the advanced tempo and key changing functionality is only available when used with the MIDI DVD library disc.
Q: What does Guide Vocals mean?
A: Tracks listed with Guide Vocals are karaoke songs that also offer lead and backing vocals. The lead vocals on these tracks can be turned on or off as required.

Not sure what's going on though.
Site is still down.
Only cashed stuff available.
