Who owns the rights to publish the catalog presently should have little to no bearing on what happens to the gazillion or so sets that were released prior to SGB folding.

Much like people selling those SoundChoice discs that SoundChoice no longer has the license to sell.

Not to say that probably aren't bootleg versions of SGB discs floating around.. but those are likely the CD-R discs with inkjet printed labels.

Pirates aren't very likely to go through the effort or expense to silkscreen label and press commercial discs to sell the set on eBay for $60.

My guess is the majority of the sets floating around were old stock that was liquidated when SGB closed its doors.

I'm speculating the reason CB bought the catalog in the first place is because it is part of the illegal hard drives and now they would be able to claim the SGB as CB property and would know if the disc sets someone displayed in an audit (if they had any discs to begin with) would be able to be added to the lawsuit under CB property infringement.
Since everyone says they will pull the discs from the manus that sue kj's for running computer and have the gall to ask for an audit, this would be another set that they would need to pull. Rumor has it that Sound Choice has purchased another defunct line as well also PHM has as well.

Spot on Lonnie. It doesn't take a rocket science to figure this out.

How can a legitimate karaoke manufacturere buy the rights to songs that were produced without licensing and then file law suits against people who bought the same tracks on a hard drive from someone else. Why can CB buy the same "illegal" tracks and get away with it?
From what I understood they acquired the proper licensing so they could do so.

The way it looks to me is that CB bought a "stolen" car and now is going to file a law suit against people that stole it from them. How can SGB sell the "rights' to something that didn't have the "rights" to produce in the first place?

Slippery slope if you ask me. I would like to see how this one ends up...maybe CB just bought the SGB logo and is trying to file law suits based on the logo alone?

This isn't an argument. It's just contradiction.

But if as some are saying Chartbuster owns the SGB series and they start filing lawsuits as well then any pirate using SGB would have that many more violations for them to pick from. To be honest none of us are even sure of who may own what out here today What if Monster Hits, MM, Pioneer, DK, etc. are now owned by Sound Choice or Chartbuster? What does that leave for a pirate to pick from without buying a lot more disc or run the risk of getting hit with a lawsuit?

It won't fly in court. That would truly be "trademark extortion" and the reasoning for purchasing the label in the first place would simply be for this type of legal action. It certainly couldn't be for the "quality" of the tracks.

Gee, I think I'll buy the rights to Radio Starz and then start suing KJ's for trademark infringement too... what a great moneymaking idea right? Wrong. The courts won't smile on it.

Besides, I've asked Chartbuster (who claimed they had "purchased the catalog and registered the copyrights through the proper channels") to provide a link to the copyrights they rightfully now own. I got nothing but evasive flack from them.

IMHO: It's all bull...

It was just a rumor I heard, I am certainly not saying it is true, but if as you say they can't produce any of the copyrights they say they own for them then I would say you are probably correct. I own a small collection of the SGB disc and while there are some that aren't exactly great there are many that are. As far as suing for a trademark violation I would have assumed that it could be done for an old established mark or a newly accuired mark, I am glad you put it into perspective. I am begining to be truly amazed at the amount of legal talent that is available on this site.

SGB was the first collection I had. It was good then, and I still use it a little, but if I had it all to do over again AND HAD AT LEAST A GRAND TO SPEND ON MUSIC, then I wouldn't buy them. So I think cheese is right. I've only done a handful of professional shows though, but done quite a few free partys. Take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Hey PaxMagnus..

You get a lot of karaoke snobs on this board.

Nothing wrong with the Sweet Georgia Brown collection, and as a professional DJ/KJ with over a decade of experience, they're a great way to build a collection for the new KJ looking to build a catalog quickly, legally, and inexpensively.

Sure there are tracks in the collection that suck, but you get that in collections costing 5x more with 1/4 of the songs.

My original 'core' group of discs were made up of original pioneer laser discs and the SGB collection. As the years went by i'd gradually replace the less than stellar SGB versions with better versions from SoundChoice & Chartbuster, but that SGB collection got me on the ground running at a time when I didn't have a lot of money to spend.

And let me tell you something else.. in the close to two years when SGB tracks vastly outnumbered tracks from other mfg's, I never once had anyone complain about the SGB version, or refuse to sing, in fact, quite the opposite.

But I will say it really depends on the kind of crowd you're trying to attract.

If you're looking to cater to the hard core karaoke singer, well then SGB discs and $25 mics just aren't going to cut it.. but if you're like me and want to cater to the 'good time' crowd who understand it's just karaoke and we're drunk having a good time.. nobody notices that many of the SGB discs are mediocre.

Music Maestro is another way to quickly fatten up a catalog on the cheap. Again, not many award winning renditions in that library, either but a very economical way to fill your book.

For the 'good time crowd', it's better to have a wide selection of average discs than an anemic collection of amazing tracks.
