Ok, this also is not new tech, I use a program called AutoHotKey ( http://www.autohotkey.com/ )
to write scripts and then assign a hot key to the script. I do this for any mouse and(or) keystrokes
that are repeated several times over the course of a gig. I use the "F" keys as the hotkeys and even
put a tiny label by it to remind me of its task.

Examples: to start or fade into a karaoke song, to start or fade into filler music, sound or video effects,
or just about any other task you would use during the course of your gig.

The end result being able to run a show almost entirely with "F" key assigned hot keys
(except of course for queueing up karaoke songs).

AHK is hotness. I made a whole GUI questionnaire thing at the last company I worked for. I use it to macro actions in games.

Wish there was more midi stuff for AHK though (maybe there is, I haven't looked) It'd be wild to launch programs with your midi controller.
