A friend of mine is going to use my system (Cover a gig for me, I am going out of town. I have all my music on my hard drive and I am using sax @ Dotty's hoster.. is there a way I can let him use it and password it so he can't copy my music, and still have it work the gig? I trust him but you never know.
Does this make sence?

Not really. If he can read it he can copy it.
Even if you set up permissions to allow him read only access he can still copy it to another drive as long as he has write permissions to write on the other drive.
Short of going into setting up a profile for the user or some other method of restricting the ability to access the drive it's not real feasible. You could always use EFS (Encrypting File System) to prevent use in another computer, allow him read only permissions, and set the operating system up to prevent him from being able to mount another drive and it would act as a deterrent.
Or pull out the original discs (or copies) and give them a player. But then they could just rip the originals... or have one person hold the computer until just before the show and pick it up immeadiately afterwards. They would have to copy the music during the show....
It's all theory though.... if they want to copy the music they can. No matter how you restrict the computer if you don't encrypt the files I can boot off a linux live cd and copy the files. As long as I have unfettered physical access to the machine I can copy the files. Basically, either you trust them to not copy your music or you don't. If you don't trust them to not copy the files I'd consider getting someone to fill in with their own songbook, cancel the gig, etc.
I do computer security work for a living (last 5-6 years) and limiting the ability of a user to copy data is pretty difficult - especially if they add/remove peripherals, put it on a network, etc.

I think I will give him the disks and let him do it that way. to copy the hard drive would not take as long as trying to copy all the disc.. (he does not know the first thing about backing up cd+g's)
thx
