I run one of the very few private room karaoke clubs in the US. Private karaoke rooms are not for people who are already great singers and performers: They are great for people who are not used to singing on a stage, or who don't want to sing on stage, who don't like to be bothered by other people's behavior and many other reasons...

In the rooms...

* You don't have to wait forever to sing
* You don't have to listen to songs you don't like while you wait
* You can try songs you would never try on stage
* You can mess up a song and no-one will ever know
* You can practice the same song over and over
* You can make any kind of playlist you like. For example, you can sing every song by the same artist
* You can build your confidence up over time (and then try public singing)
* You can have a good time just with your friends
* You don't have to deal with any other customers' bad behavior or poor singing
* Some of our rooms have recording facilities so you can make your own CD in comfort
* Private rooms are good for handicapped or singers who are not physically able to go on stage
* You can rent the room for a private birthday party or celebration
* You can have a kids party in the rooms (about 30% of our business is kids karaoke parties)
* You can have a family party in the rooms with each person choosing songs suitable for their age

We also have a lounge with a KJ that is for those people who like to sing to a crowd, or who like to watch other people performing but...

* Our public lounge is not open until 9pm. You can rent a private room from 6pm.
* Under 21s are not allowed in our lounge, so if you are under 21 you can still get a room and have fun

We have been in business for three years now and have built up a steady clients who love our rooms. Each room is very comfortable, has a professional karaoke system, powerful amplifiers and speakers, wireless mics and cool mood and effect lighting. We have over 20,000 Classic and Top 40 hits on the system. Most people don't have anything like that at home and find it far easier to go to a place like ours.

99% of our customers are non-Asians. Some of our customers will go into the rooms for an hour or two and then go to the lounge. We do tons of kids birthday parties as well many adult birthday parties, special events, summer camps and fundraisers.

I'm happy to answer any questions about how it works.

you wwant small rotations, find a local VFW or legion. The Rotations around me are rather small. you will need to be signed in. Bars like that focus on dancing more than Karaoke, But you can basically sing your Butt off if the KJ isnt a D*ck Head

my daughter was sent to Okinawa by the marine corps and suffered a huge case of karaoke withdraw due to only Asian style karaoke availability until someone brought a system and was hired on based.... They were packed every night :D

Karaoke took root in the US in the bar scene so I think it naturally evolved more into a stage performance for people who like to sing their renditions of popular songs. It attracts people who have no problem/enjoy singing in front of a crowd.

I don't know the history behind Asian karaoke but I've only known it in the context of rooms, some small, some large enough to be the size of a small bar.

The appeal is pretty simple, less stagefright as you're likely among friends, private bar service, fast rotation of songs, you can agree to skip songs if it's just not working, try to sing anything, it's like having a VIP booth at a club with dancing optional and singing. In short, it's a private party and you can do whatever the group wants to do or sing. it's license to goof off and pick some awful songs just because you can, have fun whichever way with Karaoke and your friends.

The comment earlier that you could achieve this at home is entirely true and it's what I have done, but it's not the same as everyone actually going out to a place, act drunk, and get a little messy with the place due to inevitable spilled drinks. The act of going out sometimes has it's own appeal. It's like having a bar at home, it's great but you have to account for spills and other associated clean up too.

Now stage karaoke, the way I've experienced it has always had more of an amateur singing performance vibe to it. And I think performance is the key word and difference here.

There's a place in town that offers both experiences, there's a large open area bar where wireless mics are moved around, everyone drinks, and if you pick a popular song everyone starts singing along. And it's kind of fun that way too. But pick an awful song and it's pretty hard to shy away from finishing, no issues with that if you have your own room.

I was in LA last weekend and the karaoke boxes are HUGE in KoreaTown. Why do you suppose it works for that culture? I'm just curious as to why...I rather enjoyed it, but the English song selection was extremely limited..

Yes. When I was in Tokyo my associate said "Japanese love Karaoke! But most would never think of going on a stage in front of strangers!"

Well, I think we've pretty much covered this. I've never tried one or even seen one. I'd like to just to say I've done it.

Only thing I might add (didn't see it covered) is for those that use the box instead of home, perhaps they just can't afford one at home or even know how to get one. I had one heck of a time figuring out online how to put a system together until I found this forum.

Pandora Karaoke Lounge in San Francisco has a mix of private rooms and the public lounge for karaoke. I have only been there once but I did have a great time! The rotation was not too bad either...my friends and I all got in 4 songs.

Here's the link to their site: http://www.pandorakaraoke.com/about.php
