Yep, one of the worst shows I've ever been too. About an hour away from Ottawa. The one plus,,, wasn't a pirate. Pair of 15" Peavys, probably would have sounded right if the rented host would have known what she was doing. Cheap mics, didn't even have the name on them. The mixing was atrocious. Selection looked to be about 2000. One song I got to sing was SGB version, didn't compare with the version All Hits version I'm used to. No lights, one PA right behind the singer, feedback till the host pointed the speaker 90 degrees away from everyone. The other PA was near the back of the room. No rack, laptop on a table, couldn't make out the rest of the components. Show runs from 9 to midnight. Bar owner carried the PAs out to a minivan, so I assume it was his set up. He literally pulled 2 guys off the stage that were butchering Queen BR. He sung the last song of the night. I sang one song as I said, I was there for 1.5 hours, watched 3 people sing twice after I did, I was never called up again even though I had 2 other song slips turned in. The singers were basically elbow to elbow with the host, the layout of the room allowed ample room for a decent "stage" area for the singer but they chose to crowd it into a little corner.
Meant to make it to a show in Toronto while I was there, maybe I will hit one next week as I am returning to Toronto tomorrow morning. Can't be any worse than last night. I have been to a good show in Toronto and made a networking connection last fall there with the host.

I don't have a rack system. I set up on a 4' folding table: player, pc, mixer. Then I have another table with the discs laid out in their binders. Both tables covered with black cloth. Not having a rack doesn't make for crap-eoke.

he's not picking you for not having a rack setup. i've been to a lot of great karaoke's that don't use a rack setup......
but they are organized and presented well.....
just sounds like the overall experience was crapeoke!!!!!

here's what i'm runnin':  jvc-303 akg dual wireless vocal mics zoom 9120 effects processor behringer 12 channel rack mixer with effects (effects not used cause i like the zoom effects better) antares avp-1 autotune behringer ultracurve deq2496 stereo mode/ dual 31 band eq/ feedback destroyer/ compressor & limiter mackie m800 pa amp 2 x peavey sp-5g gonna add another mackie amp 1400i and an electronic crossover so i can run speakers in bi-amp mode for better sound. what is bi-amp mode you askbasically your using 2 amp's / 4 channels to power the peavey speakers besides the full range input they also have bi mode which is a high range input & a low range input. kinda like splitting the 2 speakers into 4 seperate speakers for better sound. more power and a cleaner sound.

Unfortunately there is Crapeoke in all places. Rip, if you ever get to Halifax, give me a shout. I have heard that there is a lot of Crapeoke in Ontario from Ontarioans.

Whatever, my rack isn't rack mountable, but I figured out how to do it with a rack shelf on eBay. Even before I did and bought a nice rack, I made a home made rack. Much easier to set up, tear down and takes up much less room. If I had to be squeezed in that little spot the other night, I would have left a lot more room for the singers and it wouldn't have looked like a bad situation which is exactly what it looked like. Never the less, that was the smallest problem of the whole night. A "box" is the way to go. Not a fact of course, but my opinion and doubt too many will disagree with me.

Personally, i like having a more open set up. I can see it better, and I just prefer it. It's what I am used to.

Why not do what we do, get one or two of these. They come in various sizes and prices and readily available. Clamp them and let there be light: http://www.lightingdirect.com/clamp-lamps/c88

Putting my system in a box is not what I want to do. I do not understand why this seems to offend some people, but oh well, you can't please everyone.

Under my laptop shelf I have 2 click and stick lights velcroed to the bottom of the shelf, lighting up my mixing board. Even if my area is pitch dark, I can see everything on my mixing board and everything on my laptop. Very simple. I don't have to count on the house for lighting or tables and my footprint is 2 by 3. I am a huge fan of efficiency and to me, this is the most efficient way of doing it.
