It isn't all on the KJ to bring people in either. The venue has some stake in the night being successful and drink specials, great servers and bartenders, clean environment, etc. go a long way in bringing folks in. Sure, "regulars" are part of it, but the venues' "regulars" are also important. You are absolutely right. A good KJ with a good venue that can provide good staff & service, decent drinks at fair prices with a shot special, maybe decent food plus overall decent environment will go a long ways in attracting & retaining customers. Got that on Thursdays - we go up against a private club with $1 drinks. At first, they were clobbering us and the show was in doubt. Today, it is us that is clobbering them. A combinations of all of the factors mentioned above is the reason.

All I will counter with is that Sound Choice is used extensively at my shows and by the majority of hosts (legal or otherwise) in every city I travel to.
The smart venues educate themselves and let KJ's use whatever tools they have at their disposal to attract paying customers.

You KNOW the cheer leading squad will not believe what you have said in this post. I guess that makes me a Cheerleader because 95% of the songs I play in a night are SC. Still the best base set in the business. I don't play them so "people will notice", most don't. I play them because they are the best and most faithful reproduction of the originals which is, of course, why they became so popular in the first place.

That's amazing. I still have singers heavily asking for SC versions. Most of the songs that get sung are SC - lots of 70's-2000's. New music aside, if there was never another new song made from any manu, i'm sure I could successfully continue for another 10 years on just my SC. Using YOUR logic, i'm really surprised your DK set isn't 'rapidly fading', they haven't made a new song since 2000 or so, but i'm betting they still get used quite a bit huh?

I will play that over any other brand unless a singer specifies something else. how long since they produced anything? -Chris

Might want to re-read my post, Lon.. I said that VENUES are telling KJs not to use the product to avoid waves- not the KJ's choice. The venues don't know one brand from another except in regard to those who may cause problems for the business. DK didn't, therefore no one has asked that they not be played. Therefore, they are, and are still awell known and requested brand. Before anyone asks: No, it hasn't happened to me-yet.. Then again, I have educated my venues in regard to my being an ODB host. This was just an observation. I'm sure hosts have decided not to use them for their own reasons, pirate or not. Also, SC never had the following in the Northeast that they picked up elsewhere, because singers here started out with and grew used to other brands before SC revved up their marketing. Now, after 5 years without serious production, there are 5 years of new 21 year old singers for whom the name means nothing. Add the dwindling usage causing less exposure and you have a fading label. Yup, DK hasn't produced new stuff either, but but there is more exposure to what they HAVE produced. The void for new stuff has been filled by other brands, whether "as good" ( only to be decided by the singers) or not. As for brand requests, I still get plenty. However, if they are for brands the singer uses at home for practice, they are usually not SC. Stellar or CB maybe, but usually less expensive "more tracks for the buck" brands. For those who don't sing at home, the oldies folks still request MM ( no matter what your or my opinions are), the pops go for DK and now Zoom, and country are still CB first. The newbies don't request. Those that don't request just leave it up to me.

I'm in the northeast, in pa. , and here almost everyone uses sound choice as a primary. It is probably because those of us who got in early had pioneer, dk, maestro, and sc as they came out. In our immediate area CB was probably the most overlooked brand. I have had two venues ask to see my certs now, but no one has told me not to play SC. Around here many of the pirates have dropped the SC and CB cuts and they have been unable to build and keep much of a following. I get a lot of "kids" coming in and telling me they sang at such and suches show and had terrible versions of songs they like and would not be going back because of it. Many of these hosts are all bootleg, but some of them have good hosting skills. In our little corner the host matters, but his/her tools are just as important. You can be a great race car driver, but you can't win Indy with a go cart.
