@Cueball's "period" comment! I use the actual way the artist list themselves on the official album /wikipedia/or some other official music source. First, I DESPISE listing artist as ""HOLLEY, BUDDY & THE CRICKETS" to use an earlier listed example. That is not the natural way of saying someone's name. I use First name / last name system. Artist such as "The Temptations" are listed as such..with the "The" in the title. Again, another pet peeve is to list an artist "Temptations, The"!

I am about 1/3 of the way through my song list fixing artist names and song titles to clean up my printed books and overall song listings. I am using the industry standard DiscID-Track# - Artist - Title.zip format (ie; SC8125-15 - Eagles, The - I Can't Tell You Why). The inconsistency and all out failure by some manufacturers to properly name tracks is mind-boggling. I am sure some of the blame resides also with the KJ Pro and CDDB services, but !@#$%^&*!@#$%^&* is all I can say in these forums without getting a permanent ban.
When I started this little project, my "By Artist" songbook was 348 pages (2 Columns using Song List Generator from Latshaw). I have since trimmed 31 pages just by correcting improperly formatted artists and titles thus eliminating duplicate and screwey listing. As noted, I am only 1/3 of the way through.
Then there is the issue of artists who collaborate......with EVERYONE - 50 Cent, Beyonce, Lil' Jon, etc. I estimate that the cluster F'ery of naming that the manufacturer's generate inflates to accomodate these collaboration inflates the size of song books by 15% or more.
Oh yeah.....is it supposed to be "Brooks and Dunn"???? or "Brooks & Dunn"????
Feelin' or Feeling?
'bout or About???
Is it Buddy Holly? Or Buddy Holly and The Crickets?????
Freddie Fender? or Freddy Fender?
Prince? Prince and the New Power Generation? TAFKAP??????? Pick a name and keep it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The extend this vent session, this issue is one of many things that indicate how dysfunctional the major players in the karaoke industry are. If they can't even settle on a standard naming convention, how can we expect them to coordinate efforts to eliminate piracy? Get licensing for decent tracks in a timely manner? Get the Cloud right?
!@#$%^&^%$#!@#^%**&^%##@$%^&&&%#@@#$%%^^&&^!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
....and now, back your your regularly scheduled programming....
-Chris Yep, did all that a couple years ago. Between that and my DJ music collection, kept me very busy but in the end all worth it. Now I just keep up as I go!

After spending eighty bucks total for two different naming and artwork programs for my DJ collection, I lost all faith in those types of programs. They were worthless, only worked on about 80% of the songs and of the 80% that they did work on, many were mislabeled, mistagged, even changed artists many times. Took many many hours just finding all the wrongs ones and then still having some that were wrong. I no longer trust any of those types of programs.
Besides, as Lonnie has pointed out, doing this type of work on your own manually allows you to get to know your collection better.
Also, I don't care if the manus pay someone 6 bucks an hour, quality is implied and should NOT be sacrificed so they can save a few bucks! Get it right the first time!

***Update***
By Artist book is now down from 348 pages to 310 so far. I still have the last 1/2 of the book to filter through.

I am very proficient with the tools, the problem is - Garbage In, Garbage Out - The manufacturers and the karaoke databases use some mysterious naming scheme intrinsic to their own people-Chris I can sympathize. Though disc based, I use KJ Pro for my books. I thought I'd add a bit more info. It appears that some mfrs. PURPOSELY screwed up the information. The one that comes to the top of my head was Top Tunes. They made some nice tracks but I'm telling you, I don't think a single TT disc is correctly listed. By that I mean not just title/artist, but track listings. The discs never seem to match. Since it's virtually EVERY one of their discs I can't believe it's a KJ Pro problem, but seemingly deliberate by TT. The only thing that I can't think of is a reason for it.....

I definitely think it has less to do with KJPro and more to do with the Manufacturer's.
Btw.....down to 301 pages. I tweaked the format of the lsiting slightly and that shaved 8 pages immediately.

Chris, I'm going to assume that you're computer based, not disk based. Are you correcting the mistakes in the Latshaw song book program, or in the hard drive? Two years ago, I went through the entire book making corrections, and it came out pretty good. Bad part was, I corrected the mistakes in the Song List Generator (the book) and not in the hard drive. The next year when I redid my books, the mistakes were still there. It took a couple of weeks to do all the corrections over again in the hard drive. Now it's all good, but because of that little mistake, I ended up having to do it twice.

Every few months (if we've added any) I will fix any problems then so that I only have a few at a time. We have the Compuhost book program and it lets me sort and preview the book before printing. I have it set so that the dupes are not printed so I can look and see if there are any songs that are doubled for any reason and change them on the hard drive and the same goes for then going thru it again to look at it by artist. Now why do I go thru the whole book again at that point? Well it means that I might not miss something I might have missed the first time or two thru it, .

Once the file names are correct I am golden. -Chris

When I started this little project, my "By Artist" songbook was 348 pages (2 Columns using Song List Generator from Latshaw Systems) I am very happy to report that this project is complete. I wrapped up semi-final QA check yesterday before putting tracks into production last night. Final Page count for "By Artist" is 260 down from 348 (82 pages cut) I was able to cut a significant number of pages by categorizing music and moving to their own directories on the drive and removing them from the main library and thus the song book. Children's Christian/Praise/Worship Christmas Standards Traditional That left me with ~54000 tracks in the Main Library + Foreign Language. This is what makes up the 260 pages which I will print books for in a few weeks. I will print books for the remaining categories if/when needed. I still have about 500 discs to process, but those will be dedicated to a new rig unless I find discs with requested or unique tracks. End result - a LOT of work for..... ....extremely well organized files on my drive.... ....much faster/efficient backup and restore.... ....more intimate knowledge of exactly what I do have.... ....identified lots of interesting tracks to try or suggest to folks.... ....saving 82 pages per book means fewer dead trees and equates to significant $$$ savings.... ....less "fluff" for singers to sift through when searching for songs.... ....some of the most orderly looking karaoke books I have seen at any show.... -Chris ps.....the artist(s) that gave me the most grief - the 3 Hanks - screw those guys...... pps.....Undecided on printing manufacturer ID's. I never have up to this point and I like the clean layout of the book without them. Still considering it, but have not found that one reason that makes me feel it is necessary.

@ Chris: Remember, those that insist on Manu's on this site really are true die hard karaoke enthusiasts, and our representation is small compared the entire karaoke world who don't really know the difference.

@mrmarog - I get all that. I have never had anyone ask why there are no versions printed in the book. The people that do understand the branding ask for it and I play them if I have them and make suggestions if I don't. It certainly doesn't seem as if it will make any significant difference in my show.
I have a couple of weeks left before I print to think about it.
Besides, I print my certificates at the front of my songbook. The discerning folks will see I at least have SC, CB, and PHM versions at my shows. I am thinking of printing a small banner with a list of different manufacturers to put up on the DJ booth for those that care.

Chris that is a good idea to take special occasion songs out and make a separate book with all the occasions in it ie: Christmas, Halloween, Easter, children's, Christian, St Pats, reminiscing, etc. Leave the ones that do get sung throughout the year.
