Hi,
I am new to this forum and am in the process to find out which software is the best to do Karaoke from a laptop. Now I am going to buy a laptop myself and just need the software. I would like to know where all the songs come from. How do I find software that already has the music, or how does this all work.
Thanks for any response.

Clueless There is no best, it's what's going to work for you. I suggest you download the demos of each and decide for yourself. I prefer MTU Hoster because it fits the needs I require.

I love siglos and mtu hoster but I currently use Sax n Dotty for my shows because a few of my hosts are "technologically challenged" and S&D is about the easiest to run. It is lacking in some features, but it is stable and inexpensive.

Be sure to check out "Just Karaoke II" as well.
And for that matter... if you're just starting out, and on a tight budget, there are free programs that will do the job for you... Winamp (with the cdg plug-in) and Karafun immediately come to mind.

When it comes to music, which I think was the main part of your question here:
1. You can buy disks and rip (copy) them to your hard drive to use them with any software out there and play them directly from your hard drive. 2. Sound Choice offers different hard drive choices with up to 6,000 songs ready to use with a computer and software. 3. Some websites allow you to purchase songs and directly download them to your computer. Depending on where you live this might not be legal, or is at least in a legal grey area.
Did I leave anything out? *looking around to others*

Clueless, is this for your personal home use, or are you headed towards being a pro KJ? All the programs everyone has suggested are great programs, but might be a bit overkill if you just want to have small karaoke parties at home. For home karaoke, here are some great options. The free player will play karaoke MP3+G files just fine, but doesn't have any other bells and whistles. The KMPPlus is well worth the $24.99, as it has search and cataloguing features, plays zipped MP3+G files, and can change the pitch and tempo of songs. That's pretty much all you need for home karaoke. http://www.karaokeware.com/kmp.htmlIf you are going pro, though...add me on as a CompuHost booster. I've been using it for about 4 years now and it is a really good professional program!

I am a disc based host and have no personal opinion on any particular software. However, I would add that most of the PC based costs in my area seem to use CompuHost and be happy with it.
That being said, of course the best thing to do- as Lon and others have stated- is to try all that you can, and find the one with which YOU are most comfortable.

SongBird,
Since it appears you want to get into doing karaoke as a business, unless you want to@have BIG BUCKS available to purchase a huge number of discs and rip them, you should look into "the Karaoke Cloud Pro".It contains over 8000 songs at this time and is growing every month. You do need to use the software program they suggest. If you signup for a year at a time the cost drops to $99 per month...if you wish to go month to month it is $199 per month.
Another option would be to purchase the GEM series from sound choice for $5000, I do think they offer financing options.
This would at least give you time to start collecting discs to build your own library. Read ALL terms of service very carefully on sites that sell downloads as they do hide the "home use"-"not for professional use" clauses very well.
The cost for music will end up being at least double the cost of a professional sound system. If someone offers to sell you a pre-loaded hard drive that does not have every manufactures discs included run for the hills, you do not want to be involved in a lawsuit.
Good Luck

I swear by Virtual DJ. If you are going to be doing any DJ work, in addition to karaoke, I'd definitely go with a program that does both well.
Virtual DJ has one weakness when it comes to karaoke in that it doesn't keep a rotation for you, but I solved that by making a separate Rotation Manager. It has a scrolling marquee for the audience that shows the rotation, and it also moves files for the next singer to the desktop so one-click on Virtual DJ and the song is right there to load. It simultaneously removes the file from the previous singer. It also has a Singer History database. I'll wager my Virtual DJ, all pimped out, is better than ANY program out there. Did I mention RSS feeds from ESPN? That, too.
