I assure you that if you weren't so eager to please your crowd with the most recent available music, that they would still come to your show. That is IF you have more to offer than just the "latest music". My approach, which has been very successful for me, is to offer a large selection of music with annual updates, and if the younger singers wanted to sing the most recent songs, they can purchase them, bring them in, and I will play them.

The younger crowd has grown up with "me, me, me" as their motto, and continuing to cater to that is just feeding their "entitlement" attitude. If they want it "NOW" let them get it. I have a 16 year old grandson that finds many songs to sing in my collection and prefers the older music (60's, 70's & 80's).

This is just my opinion, your mileage may vary. Let the attacks begin!

i have most of the older crowd will nurse a can of blue ribbon that is $1.50 and the younger crowd will buy the $6.00 mixed drink and shots up the yin yang. i even see a few older ones coming in with the Mio flavoring to put in their free water. WTF????? who is that assinine?

The bar shouldn't offer free water - or even free refills - at least during karaoke. I went rounds with the club i'm at & they finally started charging for every drink.

I'd like to add, that many older singers can't drink, because of many good reasons, and depending on the venue, they often drop a good buck on dinner, before the show starts, and then stick around for the karaoke. They would not dine at that venue, if it were not for the karaoke, but many KJs just see them as water drinkers during their show.

I agree with this, I have seen people in there before the show eating and stick around to sing, drinking soda or coffee. If I weren't there to witness their eating, I would assume they were just the typical water sipper.

Actually one of the reasons I don't download. If they request a song, it may be a week or two before I get to it depending on where it's available from. Nobody NEEDS a song tonight!

So you are saying that someone that doesn't drink alcohol and can't drink soda or coffee due to medical problems restricting caffeine and the bar doesn't carry bottled water can't be there? I have yet to be to a bar that serves decaf or UN-caffeinated sodas. Here in Texas we have BYOB bars that only serve beer and setups (ice, soda, cups), so I guess a place like that would not allow someone in that just wanted to sit there and sing!

Lonnie, while I agree that nobody NEEDS a song tonight, trust & believe that those of us KJ's that have to compete with rival KJs, WE (the KJs) NEED to do everything in our power to get their song instantly. My bars are inundated weekly with KJs who swear they can do a better job than me, have more songs than me, blah blah blah. I don't need a single complaint reaching the bar or its staff, because as soon as one does, the bar starts thinking "maybe we CAN do better...."

Um, where in the world did that come from? Where did I ever say that? I said, a bar shouldn't be offering free water - or even free refills - at least during karaoke - which MEANS - wait for it - they CHARGE for every drink!!!
BTW - We serve decaf diet coke in cans.

Guess i'm lucky I don't have to compete in that manner, I don't think anyone around here (as far as I am aware of anyway) download music on the fly. Like I said, most of the places according to customers - don't even buy new music or update anything.
Nice thing about taking a request and getting it later, I can get their contact info as well. When their song come in I send them that info and majority of the time they come back to sing that song they wanted (if they aren't already coming back on a regular basis anyway). So now they are happy, they came back again and I built up my contact list for marketing.

at least out here Lon it is the opposite. lots of "i sang it with so and so".
are must have a bigger impact than i thought, the "gotta have it now" songs are the ones that every time get the kids up and dancing like it's a club (and spilling drinks so they gottas buy more  )

Oh we definitely get the dancing. I am thinking the difference is probably because most of the younger kids at my show are into the heavier rock/alternative (any rock from the 70's-early 2000's) over the newer pop & stuff. Snuff by Slipknot has been the number 1 song sung at my show since Sept. Most kj's i've talked to don't have nor never even heard of this song.
