I feel that if an artist wrote a song with language in it that they have no creativity in using inuendos or song writing talent at all.

There fixed it for you lol

I am absolutely a big fan of creative song writing, but I am also a fan of freedom of speech. If an artist wants to connect with a certain demographic by using the language of that demographic, then that is what they need to do. I may or may not like the music or listen to certain genres of music, but I don't control who comes into my venues and I am not going to restrict them.

This is a personal choice on what kinds of gigs I will accept. I turned down a 2 night weekly gig a year ago because they demanded no cursing and that I provide books with no spelled out bad words. They also wanted a guarantee that no bad words would be displayed on screen. It's not that I want to hear the language, I just don't restrict it. It was opposite of my belief system so I turned down the gig.

By the way, I absolutely hate hearing the "n" word in music, but there are a lot of people that come to karaoke and request music with that word. There is a lot of popular music that has that word in it. I may hate it, but I am not the one singing and I am not the one paying the tab at the bar.

The show I do fill - ins at, the owner was adamant about no cursing. Thankfully she doesn't hang out there at night, since she is a 75 year old woman from Germany. We allow the cursing, just because she isn't there. My gig, the owner told me not to play "too much" music with the "n" word. I try, but hey, people request what they want to hear. Sometimes people cuss on a microphone, just because they are drunk and being stupid. Oh well. Can't stop them all. We don't have a seven second delay.

I also don't do children's events or work for religious organizations. It's just not the kind of work I want to do. I can be bought, but my prices for both of those groups are high enough that no one has ever actually hired me for either. I can afford to be picky, so I am.

To help explain, I am in Muskegon Michigan. Michigan is at 90% of the income per capita and family income of the national average. Muskegon is literally at half the national average.

#1: In 2012, the median household income was $50,502, while the median household income in Muskegon, MI was $37,626, or 74.5% the national average. That is LITERALLY about 2/3, not 1/2. It does suck, and I feel for you, but last I checked this is the USA and you are free to live whereever you want so.......

Not sure where you pulled your info from, but this is from our local demographics info:
Median Household Income Muskegon $27,929 Michigan $44,667
Per Capita Income Muskegon $14,283 Michigan $22,168
In Labor Force Muskegon 53.0% Michigan 64.6%
Families below poverty level Muskegon 16.8% Michigan 7.4%

So yes, HALF the national average.

...what I keep finding time and time again are bars insisting they wont pay any more than $75 - $100 for a show. Needless to say, I haven't taken any of them...yet.

I ran into that, too. No thanks. For the last two years, I have stayed on the outskirts of town, where they seem to pay better.

I have much respect for Armon. He is the undisputed King of Karaoke in this town. His shows have taken a nosedive because ever since he ventured out on his own, I don't believe he has purchased a single new song (5+ years). Sure, his one bar is a big hit 2 (or more?) nights a week, but they also offer the best beer special in town ($1 Coors Lights). And, that is why that show has not only survived, but thrived.

I have more shows than I want right now. But, not for long. I am down to my last couple weeks at my long running Fri-Sat show. That will put me at zero (personal) shows. But, not because I can't book a show, not because I don't know how to run a damn good show. It's because I have graduated from being a karaoke SERVICE provider. Instead, I am joining the ranks of the karaoke software developers. I'll still do my weddings. At my 2014 prices, one wedding is equivalent to an entire week of full price karaoke.

At this point, I absolutely refuse to work for less than $100, and I am trying to avoid that but I may have to give in.

I also have much respect for you. I don't believe that you deserve less than full price for your shows. And, once I wrap up Alibi, I won't go out for a karaoke show for less than $200.

I'd recommend that you stay your course. Take some reduced shows at an introductory rate to get your foot in the door. But, don't cave into those bully prices. If these bar owners want professional karaoke, then make them pay professional rates. If they insist on rinky-dink karaoke, let them learn their lesson.

Or, do what I did and go across the street.

We all know how that worked out for me. 3+ years later and I'm still there.
