I like the flat fee. Simply will not play for a cut of the door/till/whatever. I am there to provide a service, not make them money. I don't need or want to know what they make. What I make is just fine for me, especially considering how much I enjoy doing it.

Our venue owners treat us as part of the team and we work with them to resolve any issues. Putting butts in the seats alone is not our goal. 30 butts drinking a water, draft, or coke or two doesn't make anyone money. We make a considerable amount more than the majority of other KJ's in our area and tend to have very long relationships with our venues because we provide more services.... we consult, we advertise and promote, we are dependable, and we do worry about more than just placing butts... our average show runs for more than 5 years and are always on a set fee basis. If we know it has been a hard year for a venue but they have treated us as partners we may not increase our prices during our annual meeting.... if business has been building well we do get rate increases. If a new owner takes over a venue and acts like a "Bar King with stick up the backside" we do add a "(.) fee"

should venues regularly report to KJs how much $ was made during karaoke night?
(i think so)

In my 5 years of being a karaoke host, I have only had 3 establishments share that info with me. Most don't and I'm really fine with that. My current Thurs night gig, where I have been since 2010 always shares that info with me. They are just extremely happy with what I do for them.

Another bar where I used to host shared that info with me because the place was new and we were trying to build up business together. Needless to say, we weren't able to build it up and I was let go after 3 months. That was fine by me because I don't want to work in a dead place anyway.

The very first bar I hosted in also shared that info with me. Once again, karaoke never caught on there either so I eventually quit after 9 months. Yep, I stuck it out for 9 whole months. I was determined to make it work, but finally reality set in and I had to face the facts.

My other venues do not share what they make with me and I'm perfectly fine with that. As long as they pay my fee and keep inviting me back each week, I could really care less what they make.

I think the only time their sales should be shared with you is when your pay depends on how much they make.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of your role.

This is a great post. There are some KJs here who actually think that their role is simply to entertain whoever wanders in and regulars- which no venue has a need to pay for. Our job is to bring in ADDITIONAL income, and enough so that the venue pulls a nice profit after paying our fee.

WE should COST the venue nothing.

In other words, we should be bringing in customers who would not normally come in and create an income, not simply deal with whoever would be there anyway.

No owner with a decent business background would or should pay for that.
