A fair karaoke contest is an oxymoron. I have held several fair contest over the years. Even found judges from the music industry. The problem is that a fair competition makes no money for the bar. The only way the bar makes money is by placing warm bodies in seats. The only way to get people in the bar is by utilizing audience voting in one way or another. This turns the karaoke competition into a popularity contest. I have found that it pisses off the talented singers and prevents them from coming to your future shows. Therefore, it's not worth it for me.
I hosted a national level competition about six years ago, was even interviewed by WB 39. Once our singers made it to the national level, The vice president it was also on the judging panel put through winners from their hometown. Needless to say that but a very bad taste in my mouth. The male what's talented enough that it could be justified. However the female winner could not sing to save her life. The backup vocals in the track she provided completely drowned in her voice out. When I took the mids out of the track to clear her vocals up, the VP ran up to me and told me to turn the music up. There are only a couple national competitions so I am not going to name names.

disagree i've ran MANY contest throughout the years that both made the bar money AND never used audience response/participation as a voting factor. The best singer won!
We were in a couple statewide contests between 75+ bars, the first year our qualifier took it to the finals & won. The 2nd year out qualifier took it to the finals for 2nd. The 3rd year WAS a joke as they had new people running it - the winner (who did not move one muscle on stage which stage presence was supposed to be 40% of the score - good singer only) WAS a friend of the main promoter everyone found out a couple weeks later. We quit doing that particular contest after that year.

"What would be a "fair" karaoke contest?"

1) Extra point for those who actually spend money in the bar.
2) Extra point for bringing people out to the show.

It's fair in my books.

It's not a popularity contest. It's a monetary contest. Nothing at all to do with singing after all is said and done. Sounds FAIR to me.

I remember a contest going back in 2009 when first prize was $500.00
Out of the blue some blind girl showed up from a 45 minute drive, entered the contest, sang one song to win a place in the finals. Then doesnt show up again till the finals and won first place.

How fair was that to have all your die hard regular singers be stripped of $500.00 because they obviously were not good enough to take first place.

They're called "RINGERS" dear. I see that all the time. Maybe there should be something stated in the rules like, you must show up at least 3 nights to become a verified finalist.

And, if the regulars aren't good enough to take 1st place, then... oh well... LIFE HAPPENS!!!!

Hey "Kathy"... lookie lookie... I didn't use a HUGE FONT.

I'd rather lose a singing contest to a blind girl who can sing well than a pretty girl who can't sing a lick but wears revealing clothes. Been there. Done that.

how fair is it for your regulars who are "obviously were not good enough to take first place" to take first place in a singing talent contest over a better singer?

I have also heard about a Karaoke host that won his OWN contest... yeah I'll pass on "talent based" contests unless its held by some national company with no ties to the local karaoke pool.

I've witnessed this. The KJ won the contest. He WAS pretty good, though.
