Sad news on the music front. Particularly for classical music fans !
Pavarotti has died at age 71
Quote: Sad news for the music world
Breaking News Italian tenor Pavarotti dies at age 71 AP - 1 minute ago ROME - Luciano Pavarotti, whose vibrant high C's and ebullient showmanship made him the most beloved and celebrated tenor since Caruso and one of the few opera singers to win crossover fame as a popular superstar, died Thursday. He was 71.
There will be MANY mourning the death of one of histories finest Operatic tenors :(

The first thread of the same name was running into technical problems likely due to it's large size. Phill made the following suggestion, and I shall do as he suggests.
Quote: Sometimes large posts have problems the thread gets too long and for some odd reason the forum goes screwy...
Not certain what causes it so it will be hard to remedy...
You may wish to add a new post at the bottom telling people to go to a new thread (which of course you would have to start)
Moderator, and administration permitting I shall leave up the last thread for only a few more days so those that have posted as recently as this evening, and today can read responses. After all interested have had a chance to read content, I suggest we allow thread 1 of Music and Musicians to fall into Karaoke Scene archives. This will be the new and improved Music and Musician thread where ALL areas regarding Music news, event, ALL STYLES OF MUSIC beit singing, instrumentalists, theory, and music news and events as well as feelings regarding the aesthetic area of music shall be welcome. ALL are welcome, none shall be excluded regardless of music preferences, level of ability, age, experience etc. If it's about music, feel free to post it, even if it's your new microphone, guitar and feel free to ask questions. Quite a few of us are veteran musicians.
Thanks.
Your blabbermouth friend..

I'd like to congratulate Charmin on her new acoustic/electric guitar. As you can see, nobody sniped it from her !
Ibanez acoustic/electric guitar she wanted closed at her initial bidding price
(I suppose I'm confused however. It appears Sheldon also bid that same sum of money as a ceiling, but Charmin got the guitar for 150. I wonder if Sheldon (having only 2 bids) had a history that the seller didn't feel comfortable with, or perhaps Sheldon recinded ??? Wouldn't Charmin need to outbid the highest bidder by a higher increment (of likely 5 dollars) to win ??

I reread it and didn't see anything about minimum history or anything. I'm not sure how it came out that way.
As far as the rest of my band mates, I am fortunate that I work with one exceptional guitar player and the other one is very good but perhaps not as detailed oriented, the drummer is also exceptional, solid and very versatile. Hmmm, bass, I didn't mention the bass player did I . We shall just say he could work a little harder especially on the Head East, that tune has a very tasty bass line. All told the original four members have over thirty years each of experience. Everybody can sing, thats one of the reasons we pick the type of tunes we do.We even do some Def Leppard and Queen. We had another practice tonight and I actually got through Never Been Any Reason in one piece. We have one more practice before we go out and if I make the same level of progress as I made between the first two, I think I'll be fine with it. My mind knows what keys to play, just trying to convince my fingers now. Hows this Kappy, at tonights practice we went through Time by Pink Floyd, Never Been Any Reason by Head East, Help by the Beatles, Low by Cracker and last but not least Big Balls by AC / DC. Trying to keep everybody happy. Oh and I have to learn a Green Day tune between now and saturday.

Steven, I bid that price first..... that's all. He must have bid up to $150, and when it still didn't say "you're the current high bidder", he gave up.
He would have had to bid what? Like 152.50 I think?
Yeah, me owns another guitar now. Gosh, I'm hasty about stuff like that sometimes. I just looked and thought "oh cool, I want it" and I bid. (once) LMAO
But I do think it'll be a good buy. Not a collector guitar by any means, but hey- it's going in MY collection:)
Actually, I showed my hubby and he was like "Charmmmmm... you bought that didn't you?"
(cause I was browsing Ebay, brought up the guitar page, and said "hey, look at this, an Ibanez... it's ending soon and it's only $150 so far... And.... he pretty much could see through the facade and guessed)
I'm a bit too transparent I reckon. But he just said he thought it would actually be a good guitar for me.... Wow, no argument? That's a first:) But it's not like I paid much for the little thing. (had I of bid $2000, he might have come a bit unglued)
See ya all later.

AH, Good point. Your bidding didn't show until your proxy-bid outbid the highest bidder. Congrats ! I'll check Orion tomorrow if you still wish for me to do-so. Of course now that the guitar is yours do you really want to know ? This could go both ways of course ? I like the contour of the guitar, the back is nice too ! comfortable looking...
I can't do anything today. This includes posting.. It's been crazy busy for me

You folks doing "When I come around" or "Time of your life" ? It'd be tough for me to feign enjoying playing Green Day. I think... Dunno.

Time of your life, Just myself and one of the guitar players is going to do it to give the other three a break. See what a nice guy I am, one of the guys really wanted to do it, the rest didn't, so I said I'd do the accompaniment just to keep him happy. Plus hey, thats another five minutes out of a set. I've only listened to it a couple of times but it pretty much sounds like I'll be doing a lot of orchestral back ground fill. I don't mind, at least it's not a super fast analog lead . Now I'm off to see what them there drummers have in common.

Green Day is probably something I could even sing. I already own the nose plugs !
When Dookie came out the 10 year younger group etc raved about it.. Who am I to judge ! It's happy music I suppose. Reminds me of our bubblegum sortuh
Charmin, here's another guitar for you to grab. At 100 delivered, this has Fishman onboard electronics, and is real eye-candy
http://cgi.ebay.com/IBANEZ-Acoustic-Ele ... dZViewItem
As a matter of fact, I might consider it..HEHEHHE

My son Harley plays "time of your life"... I like to sing that one from time to time. Gender bender, yeah, but a cool song just the same. I like the simpleness of the track, but then I'm a sucker for acoustic guitar music.
Kappy, I thought we had an agreement..... DON'T point Charmin to guitar links for Ebay or any other online auction. I'm not even gonna go look.
(more than once)

Dang.....
Teach me to bid on the first one I see that I like. LMAO
It's taking all I got in me not to bid on it anyhow at this point... that's pretty cheap so far. You gonna bid, or were you kidding?
I just find it hard to pass up instruments that are THAT cheap. I mean, like I said to ya before... unless it's got serious issues, WHAT instrument is not worth $100- $150? It's so easy to just resell them if it's not what you're looking for.

Charmin, While I certainly do not wish to be a "downer", In hopes of doing a rough appraisal of the guitar you purchased I needed to go into the closed auction list and find out all I could on the guitar.. I certainly hope you already know, and read the following about this guitar within the description.
Quote: Passive electronics that do not work. The ¼ inch jack doesn’t have a wire hooking it to the volume / tone control. There is a wire connecting the pickup to the volume / tone control. I’m not sure what it’ll take to fix it, maybe just a wire hooking the volume / tone and the ¼ inch jack together.
Quote: Kappy, I thought we had an agreement..... DON'T point Charmin to guitar links for Ebay or any other online auction. I'm not even gonna go look.
Ooooops  Quote: I'm not even gonna go look.
Anybody wish to participate in a wager ??

Quote: These drummers all have something in common. Guess what it is.
Other than they all are mammals and are extremely talented, I give. I've always said music should be learned young, they just seem to be able to get the brain cells to accept new input better than us old peoples.

They are all 5 years old ! My question is, what are the odds of ANY 5 year old having that type coordination, and ability to absorb complex total body coordination ?
Now while the girls were cute, and can't be compared to a more mature band, the singer was quite good, and I enjoyed her tasteful vibrato ability, I can't fault a child for having an immature vocal quality, she will likely be exceptionally talented when she matures, and a hope for tomorrows tasteful music world !! Did you notice how tight that little drummer was ? She really stuck to that rhythm with little to no deviation.. When she soon learns fills, she'll be spectacular ! By 7 she'll be considered exceptionally gifted..
Since I'm not a drummer I will admit this. They ALL smoked me !
(you know, as much as I hate to admit this, I'm praying that all those musicians are actually 25 year old dwarfs, because if they aren't, they are so talented, I feel ashamed of my own accomplisnments as a 50 year old male who has owned a drumset since they were only about 1 year old, and can't touch any of them in terms of ability)

Quote: They are all 5 years old ! I noticed the first three were five, I didn't catch were they mentioned it on the little guy playing wipe out, that must be why I'm not a detective. By the way, I play a lot of instruments too, but drums and I just don't get along either. Quote: You folks doing "When I come around" or "Time of your life" ? Here I mention we're doing some nice tasty Pink Floyd and you pick up on the Green Day LOL

In my case it's because as a life-long musician playing the instruments I was trained on, leg coordination was never something honed in on. I sorely lack in this area. Quote: Here I mention we're doing some nice tasty Pink Floyd and you pick up on the Green Day
True. I pick up on oxymorons LMAO (bad bad Kappy. thou shalt not judge aesthetics... <THWAP>)
(comfortably Numb is among my fav slow ballads btw). Love that song !

I've asked Operakitty to help us out with breathing and posture technique for singing. Being asthmatic, and having sinus probs myself and REALLY wanting to be able to get out've headvoice without getting dizzy and feeling I'm going to keel over... (additionally NOT wanted to monopolize a thread that is for ALL), I'd really like some who are respected and known in the showcase to get into singing aspects in here. The mods were kind enough to allow me to keep this thread in the main Karaoke forum, and I DO NOT wish to exploit that with my own preferences.. I'd really love this to branch out, get into singing aspects, and areas that will benefit Karaoke singers as well ! There's room for ALL aspects of music and musicianship in here !

Specifically, as in flute playing, when I project from the diaphragm (so to speak) I get winded and dizzy ! I believe this is a comb of not breathing correctly, and tension.. I noticed you are a soprano Opera Kitty, Does soprano utilize more head voice even when projecting than other ranges such as alto. What are the voicings in opera ? Are they still the standard Sop, Alto, and tenor ? As in womens glee ? I recall in my day in the 70's, the voices in rock music referred to as "Chest belt Tenor", are now more commonly referred to as "Mezzo-sop". A term seldon heard in the 60's and 70's in the popular realm.
Also, isn't there a place for Karaoke backing in a conservatory setting as a practice tool for classical ?

Ha! You did ask in the forum...silly me...ignore my private message... :^P Well...it's kind of a broad subject, and different people I've studied with have different techniques......I think some things work better for some people than others, so...I'll just throw a few basic things out there and answer anything specific that may come up as a result of that...
Stance - keep your feet solidly under you about shoulder distance apart and don't lock your knees. You should be able to "bounce." Keep your head up and your shoulders back and relaxed (yes, all these things are easier said than done when you're not used to it! *laugh*). Everything should be fairly loose and relaxed. Be very careful not to lean forward - it compresses your diaphragm...this is why I'm having an almost impossible time of singing right now - my injury causes me to be bent forward.
Breathing - I had one voice teacher who swore by the "pop and rest" method. He was a principal baritone with the Metropolitan opera years ago...and I think this technique was all his own as I've never come across it with anyone else. Basically, the principal is "nature abhors a vacuum." Once you need to get more air, you open your mouth and "pop" your tummy out. Air is forced in without concious thought. When you sing, "push" your tummy in to force the air up and out. Let's see if I can accurately describe this excercise....*laugh* Stand in font of a mirror, "pop" you tummy, and "spit" air. As you do this, start with your right hand in front of your tummy, when you start releasing air, raise your hand up in front of you to about eye level, and then out in front of you in a circular motion so that you are back at the "starting position" by the time you reach the end of your breath.
Other teachers (including the one I studied with in Italy) have you breathe in through your mouth when singing chest voice, and in through your nose for head voice. Breathing through your nose will raise your soft palate, while breathing through your mouth will keep it fairly level - unless it's a yawn.
Try standing "properly" and just experiment with different ways of breathing. Don't worry about making any sound - focus on what you feel your body doing when you breathe. All of your body. Make note of what your soft palate does and what your diaphragm does. Breathe in and hiss all your air out through your teeth. See how long you can keep going on one breath of air. If your neck feels tense when you do that, turn it slowly left to right to help keep it "loose."
Do EVERYTHING in front of a mirror - full length if you have it - so that you can be aware of what it looks like. You may notice things visually easier than by "feel" in the beginning.
The biggest thing really is to keep as relaxed as you can, and don't think too much! *laugh*
Hope this helps some of you. I'm happy to clarify anything that might be less than clear here or in private messages.
