I currently KJ a job every friday night but I use someone else's equipment and therefore have to pay him half of the money from the gig for basically a rental fee. Every time I get a gig I have to wait to get the equip from him and pay him 50.00. Long story short after 2 months of this I decided I want to acquire my own stuff so I am not at his mercy. I bought a Behringer xenyx1202FX mixer, 2 shure sm58 mic's, 2 behringer eurolive b212 speakers the stand for them as well as the stands for the mic as well as the wires. This all came out to just under 2000.00 and I still have to get the music and make up the books. I am not too experienced and I am also technologically handicapped so I don't know how to acquire the remainder of my supplies ie. music (karaoke and dj) I also would like to know if anyone out there knows where I would go to have my laptop and mixer put into one of those briefcase things with a fan to keep t cool. I know I need to buy a 1.5TB external hard drive to hold the music but how due I gather a collection of over 85000 songs paying the least amount possible and protect my equipment. I know how to navigate a computer and different programs but I do not know how to set it up. Someone please help me. This is my last chance to make ends meet with this economy and it turns out I am surprisingly good at KJing.

Suzanne - I wish you much success !!

The LEGAL value of 85,000 karoke songs is anywhere from $50,000 - $100,000 so that is a BIG number. Of course the market is filled with illegal hard drives that are jam packed with 1,000's of quality songs. YOU WON"T GET MUCH HELP HERE in regards to anything illegal. But PM me I know a guy who knows a guys who has a friend in prison who Knows somebody in the business

I hope you didn't pay that much. The retail value of what you list is under $1,100.00.

With regard to getting 85,000 illegal songs, you won't get help for that here.

Someone thought they were doing me a favor in buying it for me and I called the place he said he got it from and got their prices and it came out to 1716.00 before taxes. He won't tell me how much he paid but I really wanted to pay him back that was just too big of a gesture for someone I barely know so I am stuck paying the price he paid bc he really did mean well. As far as the songs the guy i rented the equipment from had a program called sax and dottys karaoke and as far as i knew he didn't gather the songs illegally, but then again I really don't know what I'm doing. I also had a friend that bought a used external hard drive from someone that had over 100,000 songs on it.

The hard drive is definitely illegal. If the other guy has 80,000+ songs, he probably is too.

As I said, the vast majority of people here won't help you with that. We emphasize legal song purchase -- many of us have invested tens of thousands of dollars in music.

That's fine. I feel like an ignorant naive (@$%&#!) for thinking it was legal. I wouldn't want to do it illegally. Do you know where I can go to have my laptop and mixer put in a box with the external hard drive with fans to keep it cool. The guy I rent the equip from has his in a briefcase type of thing with fans that run to keep the laptop cool when it runs for a long period of time.

Thank you for your time and help. I need all the help I can get.

:D GREETINGS EVERYONE I have to do one post...Yea I know, well here goes
SuzanneCrean Best of luck, but did you think about the cost of the music/CD's ....Take a tip from some that's set up from scratch. If you could FIND SOMEONE THAT WANTS OUT OR WANTS TO UP GRADE and buy them out. Get the books and CD's so you don't have to digitize all the CD+G's or whatever karaoke to a hard drive. Ask anyone; 4 to 6 weeks is not a long time to rip all your CD+G's to the hard drive then a few days more to get the book right. Suddenly the $50 you pay the other guy to rent is not so bad after all. That being said.....You Go Girl
BTW as mckyj57 said, sounds like you may have started off wrong and paid too much. He also said you would not get help for the 8,500 songs here, sure is right there, but ask if anyone is thinking of retiring, never know.
I am in Florida, there was a time when I would have sold you a laptop, yorkville AP812 (an 800 watt amp w/12 ch mixer) a couple mikes, 6,500 songs w/CD+G's and 10 books, RAQ 3 tray, a pair of stands....missing the speakers only for $4,000.....but my health got better so I'm keeping it all.
Did you consider a CAVS ???? Oh my god (I said that 4 letter word) BUT I did not say you should....but it is a cheap way to start....you know. (((do they string you up here, for your first post))) ?

Im still feeling them out. mckyj57 seems cool at least he took out the time to reply honestly. where i come from being blunt an honest is the only way. I called the guitar center to get the prices on the equip and they said
behringer eurolive B212 was 279 + tax (8.725%) times 2
behringer xenyx2012FX was 99.99 + tax
2 proline speaker stands 40 + tax each
2 proline microphone stands 40 + tax each
2 live wires T20BT 30 + tax each
2 Shure SM58 microphones 400 +tax each
2 live microphone cables 18 + tax each

Idon't know if these brands are any good or if the prices are good or bad. I really don't know the technological aspect I currently only know how to navigate not set up. I am relying on other people to advise`me or in this guys case to buying what`he`got. do you know anyhting about putting fans in a case with the equip

The SM58 mics are 100 new unless they are wireless. If they are wireless PGX/PG2 SM58s, then 1716.00 is reasonable. But if wired, that comes out to $1100.

Unless the guy at`the`store assumed they were wireless and told me the`wrong price but I didn't tell him they were wireless and in fact I asked him the price of the mic cords bc I wanted to know how much I owed this guy that bought it. I don't like oweing people especially if I barely know them. Plus I needed to buy my own equip in order to make money off this side project and being that I am ignorant to technological things like I said earlier I am relying on people that I know in the music industry on advice. I will research the price of the mics though to be sure.

I just went on the guitar center website and you are right the mics were only 100 each. Thank you for that information that just saved me 600.00 I thought I owed this guy. I don't know why the guy at the store told me they were 400.00 each.

actually scratch that I just noticed the LC on the side of the box from the mics and I looked up that number and it was 49.99 so that is another 100.00 saved on the debt. Thank you again for making me double check that.

I don't understand why you need the laptop in a box with a fan.

I might be wrong but I think most people just put them separate on a table or like me on the top of my rack. It's never overheated yet (but I do live in rainy, cold England).

At setup its just 2 or 3 plugs from the mixer to connect.

Can't help you with your main problem - that is getting the karaoke tracks to start with. Just keep looking for the cheapest starter sets you can find. It'll soon build up.

For $39.99 you can get a laptop fan. I keep mine elevated on a stand with air holes... Keeps it very cool. If your laptop is warm to the touch... its getting too hot.

Heat will kill it eventually.

By the way, you have mentioned the Behringer B212 speakers. Keep in mind they are NOT powered speakers. If you go with the B212s, you are going to need a powered amp or powered mixer.

If you are planning on going with a regular mixer and no amp, you are going to need to make sure you are getting the B212A speakers.

The "A" at the end indicates it is "active", with an amp inside.

I have a couple B212A speakers I use for monitors. I consider them a very good entry-level powered speaker, especially for those on a budget.

I concur with the b212as. Very nice, and I'm using one as a monitor. However, the JBL EON G2s are spot on perfect as mains for the mobile DJ. Pricey, yes, but for the mobile DJ there is none finer. :D
