Great piece! I hope it gets some traction. It would be nice to see some ducking and covering. 8-)

I've been purchasing those bulk SC CDGs on ebay... question is how do you know which are the real deal?

BRAVO HAL!!!! We were watching it at work after our karaoke ended, and I was glad to see what they put together for that segment!

I thought they covered the bases of the "piracy issue" VERY well with the reporting (especially for being a normal news segment that can only last about 3 minutes).

All in all, great to see the "grassroots" effort worked out for ya' and our local media came through! Kudos! :dancin:

What manu are you buying? The black market copies will look close to the genuine.
You need to have a factory genuine and compare the label on it to the ones you have bought. Chartbusters and Soundchoice use a process the is simular to a semi glossy screenprint and usually the counterfit disk label will appeare to be a matte lasered texture. Recently at Chartbuster"s corp offices I was shown several counterfit copies that have been sent in by people asking for replacements under Chartbuster's warranty agreement only to be told by Chartbusters sorry you lose and not they don't send them back. One disk had a paper photocopy label stuck on it. Some people just aren't smart! That's about a s smart as taking a five dollar bill and bleaching it out and than turning it into a counterfit One dollar bill then going to your own bank and depositing it in to your own account.

Ok you got me scrambling into my cd albums LOL. Anyway, I have Legend Series, Sound Choice, Monster Hits, Top Hits, etc... I have also been buying from acekaraoke. I did a quick check and compare and so far they're about the same as the other.

Maybe a list of trusted ebay seller that you guys are buying from would be nice.

I don't usually buy from ebay but an odd disk every now and then. Just Buyer beware. If the price is too good then that might send up a red flag. Clairfy the sellers return policy before purchasing. Ebay has a policy against illegal and counterfit products and if you get scammed the the let ebay know and the seller will get banned. And also report the seller to the Karaoke Manu and they will go after the just like the harddrive sellers. (not always as fast as we would like though)

I always check on the sellers feedback before buying anything on ebay. I'm looking to buy this one right now... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0398320291 so far the seller has 100% feedback...

Lol...yeah, he can be a tough guy to keep up with, as busy as he gets. Btw, I was talking to David and told him that you gave him "props" on the other thread...and he said "Thanks!".

Wouldn't it be just the best thing in the world to find this kind of reporting in every city across the country? Be great to watch these people scrambling - of course when you only charge $100 for a show and pay your host half of that, it's hard to save up $5000... Waaaaahhhhh.....

The reporter did a great job of presenting the issue so that the average person could understand what was going on, although the "loss of jobs" point seemed to be overly dramatic. The result of this is not that KJs are losing work, they are just being forced to accept less as pirates drive down the cost of karaoke shows.

Unfortunately, as many bar owners aren't the most law abiding and honorable people in the world - cutting corners to eke out profits - it will probably take lawsuits in their own city to encourage them on the straight and narrow.

But doesn't that go for music piracy in general? It remains rampant on file sharing sites. Most people don't think it's a crime, unless they get caught.

I'm a digital KJ, but any time SC wants to audit my discs, they can bring it on!

LOL @ Elvis...

I liked the way the Reporter mentioned the places under fire. It added a little more realism to the situation that many people are unaware of... that there can be consequences to those actions.

Nice piece, I like the way it was all Chartbuster songs being sung even when they mentioned Sound Choice. (Maybe they couldn't get the license to show the trademark :D )

Still not sure if the $5000 settlement fee is enough though.. 2 shows a week at $50 a pop would pay that in a year.

Score one for the Rumboldt team--you did a good job.

I believe Sound Choice has stated the idea wasn't to go after huge settlements like the RIAA but just to get people to either quit the business or come into legal compliance. Wonder if that $5,000 was a fine and they quit or exactly what happened there. I thought the cost for buying the Sound Choice Library was going to be $6,500. $5,000 isn't going to buy the library and pay the lawyer.

Anyway, I'm glad Rumboldt set the wheels in motion on that one. It is strange when you think that Sound Choice has to do civil suits when people have stolen from them. If someone walked into WalMart and took $10,000 worth of CDs they would be arrested on the spot.
