Correct me if I'm wrong, but some people on here think if you do anything such as; practice, bring a track that you're comfortable with, or do anything to try to sing well at karaoke, something is wrong with you. Not only are you wrong, but you kill everyone's fun(including yours), and are in need of a life. I've argued with a few people on here over that in the past, but here's what I equate to, not trying to sing well.
When I golf, I try to shoot worse than I am capable of shooting. It's more fun for everyone, and I actually get to swing my club more.
When I play baseball, I think I could hit the ball out of the park, but it's much more fun for everyone, if I just ground out to the pitcher.
So everyone can have a blast, when I play basketball, I shoot in such a way, that the ball won't even hit the rim, god forbid it should go in and ruin all the fun.
Anybody think of any other anologies, or possibly set up a pole?....

As you know, I do my best to sing poorly and thereby enrich the fun of everyone there. If they couldn't hold their ears and wince as StarDisc massacred another track and I went off key from not knowing what the heck song was playing, they wouldn't be able to enjoy themselves.

And if you gave me a pro-quality microphone, they'd miss out on all that cool handling noise, which would certainly ruin the evening for them. I mean you want to know the moment someone picks up a mic, right?

Remember Bizarro Superman? It's kind of like that.

Well, truth be told, I used to get more applause and laughter as a really bad karaoke singer than I get now that I have progressed to okay. However, in that progression to okay, if I didn't have my familiar track or if the background singers came on, I was back to comedy so I tried to ration the comedy and at least give myself a shot at succeeding by using my own discs.

Now I am in the phase where I can still do the song if it is different or there are weird people in the background trying to overpower me. And if I mess up, who was really listening anyway?

However I haven't forgotten those days when a weird version would cause me to have to change it to a stand up routine so to each their own phase of development and I don't fault others for wanting to give themselves a shot at succeeding. In fact, it takes a few good and competent singers to give me a chance for a bathroom break or make the other singers seem even funnier and more entertaining.

As for Micky J, we have a special golden Nady awaiting him if he ever turns up at our show.

Must be 4 karat gold. Have you ever felt how light those things are?

And you never know about me showing up. I have this little habit of getting around....

In a hope not to sound wishy washy on the matter , i like anyone who has the minerals to get up and have a go.

I have the facility to play singers USB sticks Custom CDG and tracks from my collection, I have the ability to change the key and apply effects. This is EASY to do and in the UK poses no legal problems .

I know of some UK KJ's who have key facility and wont use it as they think the singer is fussy!! and if they ask for a specific version they think they are even worse..I seriously don't get their problem. I i have it or can get it and It's in my power to do, i will happily.

If they are a good singer and they get the reaction they want great!, if they are a bad singer and get the reaction they want great!

I do occasionally have problems with people who think they are awesome singers but who don't get the praise or reaction that they wanted , often this can be singers who sing the same one song every week, even though they sing it well. they can start to blame the set up or the version or the key or the effects when nothing has changed , its just that the audience doesnt find the song special anymore, i do try to suggest other songs for them, but this type of singer often goes elsewhere for a while , gets a good reaction then comes back to once again big reaction.

I also like people who sing for fun and know they are not great but have a go

but the best ones to me are people who start off badly but then through practice , hard work and seeking the songs that suit their voice and style end up great and try new songs and become really good but still are fun to deal with.

I do have a few who think they are stars and have an attitude who are good singers , these are my least favourite people

Yes, the Nady lightness is a plus in certain environments where they could come flying at you. I was hit in the eye once and only suffered a bit of grill burn on the eyebrow rather than a concussion. However you could choose the AKG D5 instead. We had to reserve the 2 ton Audix OM2 for host announcing after one thowing incident. We throw it at people who try to ruin other people's fun by singing well.

I'll give it a go.
When I tell a joke, on stage or just to a small group of friends, I do my best to keep it low key, because I don't want anyone to laugh.

I always make sure to never walk around the banana peel on the floor. It's much nicer of me to step right on it and fall on my a$$. The crowd really seems to like it. One time I even wound up getting taken away in an ambulance. I got a standing ovation that night. People still laugh about it every time they see me.

Bruce, we must have you at our show. If I can find some MIDI versions of Bruce Springsteen for you then it will be all the better.

You're looking at it from what perspective?

No one is knocking the person that wants to practice, or even "sound good" as you call it. The problem is the priority they place on it. By all means do your best, just remember the context because it's not Carnegie Hall nor is it your personal concert.

When you play golf, do you first demand that everyone on the course stop what their doing to watch only you take your shot? Do you expect the course to provide you with gold plated clubs.... because it's "you" on the course?

When you play basketball, do you shout at the top of your lungs for everyone to shut up to the point they can hear your shoes squeak on the floor and watch every shot? Do you want the arena to make the hoop bigger or give you a ladder to help you?

You might be just great at golf and basketball, it's just not as important to others as you'd like it to be.

And even if you did "try not to sing well and ruin the fun" you'd only get one opportunity to do that where I work. You'd not get a second chance because it ain't about you... it's about everyone attending.

but whatever I do I will try to bring the best of my ability...

I realize that karaoke ain't "the real deal" but there is a real, live audience and that's more than enough to motivate someone to perform to the best of their ability and truly enjoy the interaction/reaction with the audience.

I have participated in professional sports and I will tell you as any other athlete could that the audience is a unique ingredient in any effort produced in public or for the public to witness.

In that regard I would suggest that for the person who signed up to sing and then stepped up to the mic and performed, it is very much about them. It is a first-person experience.

The upside to singers who wish to make an impression is that it truly brings out the best in a room full of people who are being entertained.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about what motivates someone to perform at a karaoke show as long as they are enjoying themselves.

It is simply and illusion that we are all pretending to accept while it's occurring.

Would someone please tell me what the H-ee-double-hockeysticks is so serious about karaoke that a host would sit in judgement of someone's motivation for participating or why you'd have a problem if someone created a scenario that fed their ego for the duration of their time on the mic? Big effin deal.

I just had a great show and I had to move one guy off of the stage as well as have another one tossed for throwing the mic on the floor at the end of his song. 41 others thoroughly enjoyed themselves without being self-conscious or judgemental.

Can't ruin my fun.

I didn't start singing until I was over 50. When pro singers tell me I am good, or when regular people tell me that they enjoy my singing, I like it. I am small potatoes, but I ain't the worst spud in the patch. And I enjoy that.

Chip, once again you've taken something to an extreme, that only exists in your mind. You've always stated on here, that someone who practices even a small amount, or brings in a cdg, original or burnt, needs to get a life. Hardly the Diva, that you describe here....... you're really reachin', buddy.......

You know what else is a big waste of time? All of those little league baseball kids going to the batting cages trying to get better. I mean really; how many of them are going to become Derek Jeter?

I also heard about this girl Carrie Underwood who used to go to karaoke all of the time when she was younger. Someone should have told her to relax it's only karaoke; there's no need to try to improve in front of an audience. You're never gonna be famous or anything. Duh!

Heck, I taped a banana peel to the bottom of my shoe with a piece of duct tape, so I fall down every step I take on the way up to the microphone. It takes like five minutes just to get up to the stage. Then I make a wild grab for the mic and start singing my song, Paul Simon's Slip Sliding Away.

When I get back to the bar, I start sipping my water again (if nobody's stolen it, that is) and I always drink it from the upper rim of the glass.

THE PROBLEM IN OUR POLITICALLY CORRECT WORLD IS THAT SOCIETY FROWNS UPON PEOPLE WHO DO SOMETHNG BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE. They want everyone to be the same. Middle of the road. if you sing really well, you make the "other" singers feel bad. Awwwww!. You're a show off. You're a Diva. Blah Blah Blah

No. It's only the one's that tell you how good they are and tell the others they are better that are the divas.
