Besides singing in the shower.........
Do you sing in the car and keep fingering the replay button on the CD?
Do you print out the lyrics and keep them laying around?
You know what I do?....I do all the above, and...
I keep a mic on a stand next to the computer....adjusted so's it right in my face....The mic is jacked into my system, and the player is set on "repeat track".
The hard part is restraining myself from singing and just listening. I have to learn a song in stages.....A few lyrics at a time.....Starting at the first few lines, then the next...listening as I go. Making my stop to really listen.
As always, its the chorus that is easiest and seems to attrack me to the song to start with....but the hard part is always the intro and filler parts.
What do you guys do to end up with a killer?

I only do that with songs I really want to sing. Smooth comes to mind. I played that song in my car about 100 times. I listened to it in its entirety about 60 times, then picked it apart.
As a musician I have done that alot with songs. Listen, rewind, listen.
My biggest advise to you is not to try and sing the song while listening to it the first 20 times or so. When people try to sing while listening, they misinterpret parts. Like I said I am also a musician, and I see too many of them do that (noodle while listening) and don't get it until they "Listen" again.

I usually hear it on the radio on my way to the show and think, "I bet I could sing that!" If I remember to try it, I do. If I get through at least 80% of without without any major screwups, then I think about buying the CD to fill in the missing parts.
Personally, if I sing along to a song too much, it hurts my karaoke because I become too dependent on the actual vocals to cover my goofs.

I used to sing in the car (till the insurance got to high). That is where I used to learn songs.
Now, if I really want to learn a song, I first try my hardest to get the karaoke backing (with words).
Then, I listen to the original song a couple of times to get the gist of the song. Then I use the karaoke backing to learn the song and try to make it my own (so I don't sound so much like the original singer).
If I can't get the karaoke backing, I just listen to the song at work over and over as background noise. That way, I will hear it and eventally learn all the words.
The car way was the best for me........I miss my car and deck sniff sniff....

If I'm trying to learn a new track, I play it over and over while I'm driving and sing along with it... I don't worry about trying to get it exact, as NOTHING I sing ends exactly like the original anyway
And when I think I'm ready to take some crits, I'll sing it on Paltalk or post it on the Showcase

OK,
You are telling me you never practiced "Rainy Night In Georgia"?
Yeah, right!.........I heard your version on Singer's Showcase........That took lots of practice.
I want to hear you sing "I let her lie" by Daryl Singletary. So start practicing.

, i never said i didn't sing it .....i said i never pratice.... it comes out the way it comes out most times....trust me i'm not bragging here, i'm never satisfied with what i sing....but i really hate singing songs over and over... so after a couple of takes its done, like it r not, most times i don't like it...but o well
if its a song i have never heard r a style i have never really sang before, like the one u mentioned, i will have to listen to it a few times to learn the phrasing...again not bragging...i was just posting what i do to sing a song... sorry if it sounded like bragging, wasn't meant to be....
i have been singing all my life so it comes pretty natural now...
as for the brook benton song u mentioned that was a very easy song to sing...i love his singing and style

I won't sing a song in public that I haven't practiced. I'm just funny that way. I just go over it until I can sing it without looking at the screen.

I don't really rehearse. I think if you know how the song goes and if its the right fit for you, your best performance is going to be the first one, right out in front of everybody.
I do go through a process I call "blocking out". I'll play it to watch the words go by and listen to the music, and I may mutter it under my breath to work out some style issues. If I get to a point where I have no clue as to how it goes, I'll try to hash it out by myself, then I'll try to find a recording of the song that I can listen to. Then, its up to me whether I go with my hashed out version or the original. I did this with Autumn Leaves, which I had never heard before, and I couldn't get a recording, so I did it my way and it turned out OK. Later I heard a Willie Nelson version and I liked my own better, at least as far as style goes.

I'm with Kkid.. There isn't a song that I have recorded for showcase or done live that I haven't rehearsed. It just a natural given for performance.. I will listen to the original versions.. all the cover versions available to me, then make my call to which arrangement I wanna do or make my own arrangement.
And go from there. AND IT"S ALOT OF STUDY
Then I rehearse the arrangement that is the most sutable for me.
Alot of times I try to do as close to the original as possible, unfortunately... that is not possible my styling is usually higher in key and more southerner, or midwesterner depending the genra than what is called for.
but I do rehearse extensively approx an hour per song before tracking.
***Also about rehersing Live: 6 days Before a live show for 4 hours/ day. We do the whole set straight through. I also have that whole set recorded and Mastered on CDR for off weeks.. (nor Karaoke either.)

This is an interesting thread. It looks like the world is not only split into who does karaoke and who doesn't, but within the karaokers its split into who rehearses and who doesn't.

I guess that I'm a little different on some things. I started doing Karaoke about a year & a 1/2 ago and before that, the last time I sang was in Jr. hi. (30 yrs). I was into the Choir, accapella and ensemble thing. Anyways I guess I knew a lot of songs back then! Since I started I noticed the crowds react & have more fun to the newer R&B stuff, depending on the venue. On the newer stuff, I have to listen several times and break down the real difficult sections. Some of the rap stuff is really hard to get the flow just right or it's so fast you have to print it out and work on it. The old songs from my youth I'll sometimes wing it, although I try to get the CDG and practice at home. On most of the other unfamiliar songs I get the CDG's and listen with the guide vocal then sing along with the guide vocals then sing without 'em.
