Since I don't return slips at the end of the night, using them for advertising is pointless. Although, I do have my name, logo, and phone number on the front, I'll just stick to business cards. For those that still hold, sort and give back slips, then it it might be a good idea.

That gives them time to decide what they are going to sing. When I had them fill out slips, they would more often then not change their minds on the song they wished to sing. They wasted way too many request slips. Also, this ended the problem of them using the request slips for giving out their phone number and not for Karaoke.
Books are great for looking up songs BEFORE they get on the stage. Keeping things flowing quickly, with very little time between singers, will dramatically improve your show. Don't fall into the trap of letting them tell you what they want to sing when they get up there. Insist on a song ahead of time and they can only change songs BEFORE they get on the stage. I don't care if you only have 5 singers, that number may sometime in the future grow to 30 singers and running an efficient show will make you the KING of karaoke.
It starts with Books, or a kiosk, or an app. AND I love slips. Slips give you the opportunity to process a song request when you have the time, without the fear of forgetting what the singer just ASKED you to do.
PS. Song slips can't cost you that much can they? Thank you for responding, I hosted shows for over 20 years the way you are describing how you prefer to host your show. I ALWAYS had lag time because people want to change their songs. I don't know what trap you are referring too. My show runs remarkably quicker the way I run my rotation now. The rotation is posted on the screen, I always announce the next singer and the sing on deck. The customers know that they must have their song ready by the time they get back to the stage. I don't know how many singers you have at your shows but by 10:00pm I have over 30 singers practically every nite I am working. By the customer screen the singers also know the rotation, their names are always put in, I don't have to worry about putting the song in the rotation yet. After the first singer, the next singer knows they will be next, so they come and tell me what they are singing. I never forget because I put it in right then when they tell me. I have no lag time between songs unless the singer doesn't sing then I call the next person up. I have trained my customers to be ready when their names are called or they know that their name will be put at the end of the rotation and the next singer's name will be called. Experience removes the lag time. I am very proactive with my customers. I have them fill out a survey and ask for their opinions about my shows. Every single customer likes the way I run my rotation. Their first thought when they get to the venue is getting their name into the rotation. They know that after their name is in that they can get seated, comfortable and relaxed before they decide what they are singing, the song decision can wait. I have a large following because they know that they are taken care of, I have a strict rotation, I DO NOT show favoritism to anyone, I DO NOT take bribes from singers to be put up in the rotation, they respect that. I have a great sound system (I am a sound engineer), everything is geared to the customer. To answer your question: When you have an average of 34+ singers a nite, you work 6 nites a week, 5 hours per nite, your customers are using the request forms for uses other than a request form, yes they do get expensive. Ok, Mr Scott, why didn't we go to this place when I came to Utah a couple months ago? That guy did have a lot of songs, over 100,000 if I remember right. Brewskies wasn't it? I like song slips for two reasons mentioned, spelling and not forgetting if they just come up and tell you while you are busy. I have a paper cutter at home so I spend little time making song slips. I have the Compuhost Karaoke Kiosk but having problems using it so still using books. I will still keep at least one once I do go Kiosk. You should have come to my show. Brewskis is the name of the bar you were referring to. The KJ (Mr. Music) there does take bribes in fact he insists on it. It is very unfortunate that he does that. My business has grown since he started doing that. I had a Tuesday off 3 weeks ago. I went in at 8:30p I put 3 songs in and he didn't call my name until 12:45p. I did not bribe him and no one at my table bribed him either. We sat and watched others sing over and over again. It was a slow night. To me, that is not good business. Oh well. If you are ever back in this area get ahold of me. I'll show you my legal catalog. I can show you all the discs I own for all the songs I have also. He may have over 100K songs on his great hard drive that he bought on the internet.

[/quote] llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll It was a good atmosphere, his sound wasn't bad, he reminded me of the Saturday Night skit with Mike Myers "Sprockets" with his black outfit and ponytail, stage was very high, not nosebleed high but pretty high. Younger crowd, polite. He skipped me once in the rotation, said he called me. Found that a bit strange as I was right there except for a potty break and I'm sure Mr. Scott would have let him know. I hate to call someone out for being a pirate on here without proof but it was obvious. He was using books but the shape of the books is a bit foggy to me at this point. I'm sure Mr. Scott remembers, I was drinking heavily! I do believe he had a money jar out. I doubt I will ever be there again, I travel some for my company, usually to our company facilities but this was a benchmarking trip to visit Autoliv. But ya never know!

I hope you reported him.

I hope you reported him. I have not reported him. I believe in karma. What goes around comes around. He is what I call a bottom feeder. When he moved here he undercut me on two different gigs. I was let go on both and he lasted one week at both places. Then called me back but I replaced my nights. I always tell club owners, "You get what you pay for." When he got the hard drive he went around bragging to everyone on how many songs he got and how cheap it was. He even copied it twice that I know of and sold it to some DJs wanting to add Karaoke. I have warned the DJs when they told me about "the deal" they got from him. , it's sad. I will just wait for the piracy police to show up in this area. They will get him. He is down to only 2 gigs now anyway, Brewskis and the F.O.E.. Brewskis has already asked me to replace him. I am already doing a gig that is going great on that night or I'd take it. Brewskis can be a fun bar.

I only give slips back to people that ask for them. Otherwise they go to the recycle bin. People do take slips for notes or phone numbers, etc. This is where the advertising actually can (and has) come into play. I have my contact info/facebook listed. Usually get a new friend request at least once a week from someone that has sung at my show.

I put it on here somewhere, but I try to make my book as entertaining as possible, with a list of "Rules of Karaoke", how the rotation works, how to sign up, etc.
But the final rule is "a well placed $20 renders all previous rules moot."
This has happened exactly 3x in 8 years, so all you purists can choke your screams off in your throats.
I keep vacillating on books vs. no books. I'm getting some made for this season but I'm really not happy about it. But yeah, flipping through the book is a big part of the experience, so why not? I just truly hate lugging them around, wiping them down after the gig, replacing all the pages the drunks rip out, putting the pages back in order when one of them drops it on the floor and the binder springs open, etc.
And, without fail, no matter how many books I get printed, within the first week 2 of them will go missing. I go in with 10, I leave with 8, then I'll have 8 for the next 4 years. It's uncanny.

Another option is to superglue them closed however, then you have to make an additions book until you re-print Athena

If i were still hosting, I know only one thing for a fact, I would not use a kiosk in a place that wasn't a weekly gig.
In otherword somewhere where I can leave all the network stuff permanantly set up.
It just isn't worth the hassle of breaking down and setting up the extra equipment.
Other than that. I would always have at least a couple of books. Some people are just tactile by nature, they like something they can touch and lhumb thru.

I do believe it has it's own worth, but I would never drop books entirely as I run my own shows like I would want to go to - and that includes BOOKS!

I only do updates 1-2x a year, maybe not even that often now that I'm completely digital and adding 50-100 songs per month depending on what's on sale. I'll just do new books every couple of years. Were I still full-time I would be more diligent, as I was in years past. And I've heard from all precincts and decided to do books for this year, kids/ adult combos. The main reason? My major place of employment is making them for me.
