1. What is your definition of a "critique" versus a "just for fun" sub? ********** A critique is a voicing of your opinion as to what you believe was good, bad, right or wrong with a performance given and hopefully suggestion(s) as to what you believe  could be done to improve said performance. “Just For Fun” sub is just that. No critique requested..
2. Are only positive comments allowed or appropriate? ********** No, but as long as I’ve been on this site the negative comments have been tempered with thoughtful kindness.
3. What type of negative (if any) criticism is appropriate? **********as long as it is given in a helpful and inspiring way, it’s appropriate.
4. Do you feel that the ranking system is doing it's job? ********** While I believe we are maybe a little too giving in our ranking, I still tend to believe it is doing it’s job because there are some that quite frankly “couldn’t handle the truth” Besides this is supposed to be a fun and inspiring site…better to show a little leniency to the less talented so as to inspire them. If they want the REAL truth, either have another section on here for that or have them ask their vocal coach. We all know what we like but we are not all qualified to judge. This is why I will rank (sometimes too high) but I won’t judge unless actually asked.
5. Do you take a member to task if you felt they left undeserved negative comments for a sub? ********** NO..Maybe in a PM but not in the reply because that could be construed as being inciteful. I would just say, thanks for your critique, I appreciate it very much. Something like that. Then in a pm……give em hell if you don’t agree…LOL
6. If the previous was a "yes" Do you not believe that everyone is entitled to an opinion...or if you do... do you feel that they should be suppressed if less than positive? If so Why? ********** N/A
7. Do you want honest suggestions on ways you can improve? ********** Yes
8. Do you consider yourself to have an open mind when someone offers constructive criticism? ********** Yes. I’m my own worse critique.
9. what circumstances- if any- would be appropriate for "fluffing" someone's sub? ********** I don’t really go for fluffing but it appears to me it is the “status quo” or the “MO” on this site. That being said,  you can tell (at least I can)  when it’s sincere, …and then those are golden nuggets to me.
10. Can you offer any suggestions of things that would make SS more condusive as a learning experience? ********** I think it’s already a great learning experience for both the novice and more pro-like. However, as I said earlier, if there were to be another section on this site one could go to for a more in-depth critique by someone or several that are qualified such as yourself and are willing to offer some real help to someone who asks….it would be a real plus for this site.
11. Do you want it to be a learning experience- or just a praise committee? ********** For me, I’ll take em both. I’ve been singing for more years than a lot of the folks on here have been alive..sob sob LOL,  but I find I’m still learning all the time from someone I hear. I will, however always appreciate someone’s honest critique. See, everybody has ego but left unchecked it can be a negative for your growth, for sure.  but YES YES YES please give me the praise. LOL   after all isn’t that (If it’s sincere) what we ALL want?  We want to be able to share our talent with someone who truly enjoys  AND appreciates it. After all, what successful  “STAR” out there in the real world making millions of dollars doesn’t enjoy all the admiration from the fans? You know….. those of us that may aspire to be singers and have a modicum of talent, I believe it’s a gift because there are lots of folks that really can’t. carry a tune at all, so I think everyone on this site deserves an A for effort and some deserve an A for talent.
12. why did you sign up for SS and what prompts you to sub songs? What do you hope to get out of your experience on SS?……I signed up for SS to share my love for singing. I also get a chance to hear so many good singers. AND ok, I admit it********** I love the no fluff comments. Every once in a while, I get a true heartfelt comment from someone that really liked what I did and it makes me feel GREEAAT!

I want to ADD……This is not the place to embarrass, demean condescend, patronize or incite in anyway. And that’s exactly what Morgen (Vicki) did to me the other day. I don’t know how MorgenLeFey  (Vicki) got that I rated her a 7 on her song because I DID NOT. (I NEVER HAVE RATED ANYONE A 7) I rated her a 9.
However, because somehow she got THAT I rated her a 7 she posted the following making me out to be something I am not. Implying I’m a liar and despicable in character. I gave her a chance to explain in a PM but she hasn’t contacted me….. Look…….I could care less what she may think of me personally but her comments fueled other comments.  Someone then posted…..”what’s up with this paddy dude” and that ticked me off. Vicki, if you are reading this……Straighten yourself up!!…..your supposed to be one of the helpful people on this site. I don’t appreciate at all what you did to me and it’s not a little thing to me. So how about YOU standing up and showing some courage in admitting you were in error!   Pat  aka  Paddyboy

This is what Vicki wrote to me for all to see.

Paddy dude its ok to rank me low, but please have the courage to stand up and give a reason. Otherwise what’s the use of ranking….I sub under C in the hope someone will indeed give me the benefit of their advice and experience…by telling me how superbly I did then ranking low you appear to be lying or taking a cheap shot. Sooo…simply say Vicki (note the spelling there)  :-) I thought you did a great job on the song but your timing was off in parts so I am rating you a 7. See it’s simple :)

NOTE TO VICKI:   You are the most condescending, patronizing individual on here. Everything you post has a bit of sarcasm to it.

Hmmm, i'n a little confused, the sub in question seems to be more of a chat about an upcoming trip, though there is a song at the end...I don't know Paddy, I feel your pain, some guy called me an idiot the other day for leaving a lighthearted compliment on another persons submission. I do know Vicki and consider her a friend, but I think that submission should have probably been subbed under JFF in the first place, of course she has every right to sub it under anything she wishes though. My opinion, ya can't win or lose over in the SS, if your honest, you get told off, if you fluff you get told off, and there is a whole lotta butt-kissing in between. This isn't even a singing site anymore, it's a social call......

wow paddy I just read this...
sorry if I didnt jump and come running as soon as you posted blame it on the time difference and the fact that I didnt get in till 3am this morning from my gig.

Glad you posted my comment to you...because basically mate I still stand by what I wrote to you...if you are to use the rank then please have the courage of your convictions and explain why you have. it is counter productive and subversive to fluff and oohhh and ahhh over someone as you had done before changing your comment, then secretly give them a low ranking :)

As to some of your other comments...patronising? never...sarcastic? hell yes I take the mickey out of everyone and everything including myself...and I make a living out of my wit and my rather biting humour. Paddy I am proudly polarising so your low opinion of me means very little in my life.

Should I feel chastised by your comments? Why should I? I very nicely pointed out to you that I appreciate honesty and you werent being honest, and that I appreciate my name being spelled correctly...

frankly dude if your ego is so fragile that you cant take that then I do feel for you
Blessed Be

Well maybe not for long...lol...I'm sorry Vicki, but I just have to disagree with you on this argument....I don't understand why anyone is obligated to give a reason for giving a rank of their choosing....Maybe the guy didn't know how to word the way the song settled with him?  That's precisely the reason I don't rank or critique anyone in SS. I do realize when something doesn't sound right, but i'm not always sure on how to word a thoughtful critique that would be beneficial for the submitter.

Yanno this is exactly why I feel (IMO) the Rank feature should be eliminated altogether.  What one person feels is a 9 another could hear as a 6; in other words rank is subjective to the individual listener and there will ALWAYS be disagreement on what is what.

Although I will try to give an honest critique occasionally (if asked for) I stopped giving rank shortly after joining the site.  It simply serves no purpose.

I agree Cathi......The only reason I can see why the powers that be keep the rank feature, is to lure in new members....Alot of folks want to know what others honestly think about their vocal abilities.....They join, put a song up under C, and are immediatly smothered with compliments about how great they are.....Then, a few days later, someone is honest with them, or gives them a less then desirable ranking, and all hell breaks lose....Next thing you know, were in here hashing it out in the forums for the 10,000th time....lmao.....it's so predictable, and even comical......But there are alot of folks who sign up primarily for the rank feature...I am guilty as sin...................but it didn't take me long to wise up.

But at the same time, you are also subject to ridicule for being overly friendly in SS, which I learned the hard way the other day....I often ask myself why I pay to be a member here.....lol....I think from now on, i'll just drop into people's submissions and say "Nathan was here" and leave it at that....LMAO

I will say this once more then the subject is closed...if you read my response to Paddy that he so kindly included in his diatribe, I said that I have no problems with him ranking me down...I know where I sit in the scheme of things and its not as a 10...what I have issued with is the fluff and crap. He was as fluffy and effusive as everyone else. IF you are to use rank then have the courage to stand up and say so...that way those of us who are actually hoping for some constructive feedback get it :) simple, end of story

Unfortunately some things never change and there will always be someone who isn't in the know (or is just flat out pi$$y) who feels they've got to bring any situation to heel.  Hells bells darlin', I've never known you to be anything but friendly, cordial and helpful to all around.

I for one hope you don't take it too much to heart and will continue to sub, this place needs members like you.  Otherwise the a$$es win and this place will start going down the tubes again
