karen i am probably the only one here that has showed horses in 4H or ridden a bronc out of the shute. I grew up riding and have very few miles on a bycycle My entire philosophies are formed with old Western traditions. At 4 years old I knew that you didnt whip horses kick dogs or abuse women If a man was down you did not kick him but helped him up then hit him again.
Horses and mules are very special part of my life and this is Petunia
TOTAL HIJACK HERE!
I grew up in the lower mainland of British Columbia - everyone had horses. I lived in a lot of other places before setting in Snohomish County, Washington, which has the highest per capita horse ownership rate in the entire state (including eastern Wa, which has its share of big ranches and cowboys!)....My daughter showed horses in 4H. Never beat my horses or my dogs, or my kids for that matter. There is so much to be said for getting the best out of an animal or a human being. It translates, doesn't it. I like the part you say about helping him up and then hitting him...WOOHOO! Petuna is adorable. Miss my horses but have arranged to be able to see and ride them whenever I want (and get time). Nothing better than that smell - the entire smell - from what comes out to what's on top...

"Some" people want a very special area where everyone has to agree on EVERYTHING....At least everything that Eric says.
A forum is a place for debate. It is a place for point and counter point discussions. Why would a KJ want to ask a question about the karaoke business without getting any input from the people that keep him or her in business?
Would a guy who sells Hot Dogs for a living only want input from other people who sell Hot Dogs???? Wouldn't he also want input from the people who actually like to BUY Hot Dogs as well???
ORIGINAL POSTER: I sell Oscar Meyer Hot Dogs and I don't seem to be selling very many. Are there any other Hot Dog sellers out there with any advice that could help me in my business venture?
HOT DOG SELLER: I sell Ball Park Franks and I seem to sell quite a few.
HOT DOG BUYER: I prefer Sabrett's HOT DOGS. I think you would do well if you tried selling them instead of Oscar Meyer Hot Dogs.
ORIGINAL POSTER: MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS HOT DOG BUYER!!!! NOBODY ASKED YOU. Your opinion is worthless to me. You've never sold a HOT DOG so you can have no valid opinions on the subject.
HOT DOG BUYER: ....but I don't like Oscar Meyer HOT DOGS so I wouldn't buy HOT DOGS from you but I would buy HOT DOGS from you if you sold Sabrett HOT DOGS instead.
ORIGINAL POSTER: Go to Hell Hot Dog Buyer. You have no right to even be here. I don't like Sabrett HOT DOGS myself so they can't be any good. Now go away and don't post here until you get into the HOT DOG business yourself.

My point was if you want singer interaction, opinion, etc, then sure, this particular part of the forum is apt.
When you're talking software, equipment, hardware, and philosophy on how best to do it, some singer input is just extra stuff to thread through.
There was a reason for the founding of that forum.
Now in THIS particular discussion, singer participation IS wanted! It IS good to hear the other side of things, even if I don't particularily agree with the dissenting opinions, singers and KJs alike.
This is one of those that nobody's right, and nobody's wrong, or everybody's right and wrong.

Pardon the pun but maybe we should pony up to the bar and have a drink. My sis was a western style state champion rider. Quarter horses in our family growing up. They never minded filler music.

I'm going to weigh in on Lonnie's side again. If a show is going to be a combination karaoke/dj show it would be good to advertise it as such so that the singers know what to expect.
When I go to a show I go to sing. If the show is billed as karaoke and the KJ is using filler music and it's slowing down the rotation I'm likely to go somewhere else.
I'm starting a show at a new venue next week and the owner wants to combine karaoke with open mic. I haven't seen it done before but I don't know why it couldn't work. My notice in the enterainment section of the local newspaper specifies that it's karaoke and open mic. My ad on the local open mic website specifies that it's karaoke and open mic. And I've given the venue posters that specify that it's karaoke and open mic. I don't want anyone who shows up to think that the show is something that it's not.
I will admit that I'm a little concerned that some singers won't be interested because of the open mic feature. Open mic performers might feel the same way. But at least they will know what to expect ahead of time.
If this format doesn't work as well as the venue owner is hoping we'll probably try something else. I think it's worth a shot. It's a novel concept for this area and maybe we'll draw more people because of it. But no one who comes in will be surprised at what we're doing.

Well, I just returned from one of the three-singer shows where we just had the singers sing with no filler or DJ music. Over time, it has built to the point where it now has no shot at being a three-singer show. We went an hour over, and it was the most successful Tuesday night ever seen at my service club. I only do it once a month, and now people are begging me to do it every Tuesday. One singer -- a really good one who absolutely nailed Mercy -- came 60 miles to be there.
I remain convinced that letting your singers sing is the way to build a show.

I grew up riding horses as well, so I guess you're wrong about that!
Karen: I agree with you. I miss the smells, ALL of them, but the smell of a sweaty horse is best! And a well-worn saddle.
Bruce: THE HORSE IS DEAD. Let it lie. Leave the poor thing some dignity, already, will ya?

My horse is alive and well. You can bury yours if you want to though. This thread will be dead when people stop reading it and stop leaving comments in it. NO SOONER Apparently, Now I'M NOT even supposed to agree with anyone.
If you are so tired of this thread, Why do you keep coming back to see what's going on in it? .... just to tell OTHER people what to do?

BFFL, call it a very morbid sense of curiosity. Your tenacity is amazing...as is the time that you burn up each day typing in long responses which add nothing to the content of the thread. I've always been interested in psychology and what motivates people to act the way they do. I can't even postulate on this one.

Bruce: Once again, you've COMPLETELY missed my point.
Getting back to the OP, I have never played filler music between singers and I doubt I ever will. I recently had ONE singer at a new show and we traded off until he didn't feel like singing for awhile. I then sang a bunch and in short order, a bunch of singers came in and solved the problem!

Happy to hear that. Sounds like a show that I might enjoy attending.

I strongly believe in my beliefs. It's that simple. I'm quite capable of multi tasking. I don't have to work at this point in my life so I can check up on the threads that interest me whenever I want to. There are literally HUNDREDS of threads on this Forum that I have never posted to, because they don't interest me. My major crime on this site is that I choose to NOT play the politically correct "game" that so many others are willing to play. I made the terrible "mistake" of telling a few people that they were lousy singers years ago and I have been "black balled" by most of their "friends" for doing so. I'd rather get 5 honest comments on my singing than 30 out right lies. I was told by someone just the other day that he didn't really like my singing. I didn't say one negative word in response to his "OPINION". That is not always the case around here. I have accepted that and moved on. If you believe in something, you defend it to the end. If someone agrees with me on something, what is so wrong with me giving that person an "attaboy" for doing so? All I'm doing is showing him my "honest" support for the way he thinks about something. I appreciate it when someone around here is "brave enough" to agree with me.
Some people around here have gotten to the point where they are now counting how many times I post a comment in a given thread.
Maybe he should spend some of his time counting all of the various threads on this forum that I have never posted to?
What's kind of funny is that in the Singers Showcase, it is frowned upon to NOT respond to a person who has left a comment on your song, even if there are 30 comments or more but here on the Forum, I'm expected to ignore comments that seem to be directly aimed at me.
I didn't read in the rules that there was a limit to how many times a single person could post in an individual thread.
I'm certainly not going to take the time to count all of eric's and matt's posts in a given time period.......Okay maybe I will...... they have 1443(Oct. 2006) and 6785(Nov. 2002) posts respectively at this particular point in time and I have made 377 since May of 2005.
The breakdown is as follows; Eric posts an average of 50 posts per month. Matt's average is 89 posts per month and my HUGE average is 8 posts per month, including the last few days where I have posted so many times that it has caused eric to throw a hissy fit.
See how you can easily manipulate numbers to make a point.
I can use a calculator too, eric.
