I sing Funky Cold Medina and this almost always gets some dancers on the floor. At the end of the song there is an outro, then a 2 second pause, then the outro picks up again. If there are people dancing, I ad-lib a bit of chorus there. If there is no dancing, I walk off with no ad-lib.
So I think you have to take the singer's cue here. If they have a bit of ad-lib they want to do, I think it's ok. Now if someone is just being an idiot on the mic, that's a different story.

The actual length is determined by the mp3. With CEP or Sonar (or similar) you can cut the end off and with a volume envelope fade from full to nothing at whatever point you want.

Hello! I've had that happen with a song just repeating itself so the singer just walked away....and everyone clapped their hands and I just faded out the song! It's never been a problem for me....and if a singer looks at me like when is it gonna end, sometimes I just crack jokes and we laugh!! No harm done to end a song soon!! ![dancin :dancin:](./images/smilies/emot-dance.gif)

If the singer gives me an awkward look like "What do I do now?" I know it's time. "GIVE IT UP FOR -" I'll yell, they trot off, and I fade.
Sometimes they leave early. "All Apologies" (Nirvana)... no one goes until the end, repeating that one line over and over for several minutes. "Criminal" (Fiona Apple)... depends on the singer. Some do the outro vamp, some leave, and some try the vamp but shouldn't if you know what I'm sayin'. I've got two versions of that one, one with the vamp (SC) and one without (CB) and once I know the singer I know which one to use.
Old skool raps, "Ice Ice Baby" in particular, often have long tails. Because everyone's usually on the floor I let it run, thanking the singer over the top.

I have songs with long outros that i sing. During the outro, i lower the volume and do a "voice over" of the nightly announcements. No wasted singing time. ![dancin :dancin:](./images/smilies/emot-dance.gif)
