Figuratively of course
I guess my thoughts are, (and this is my opinion, but I'd think those who constantly yell "it's not about singing, IT'S JUST KARAOKE and for fun") if a bad singer is that abrasive, isn't it the KJ's fault too for not working the board with this in mind ? The KJ must set the balance so things work for both singer and listener... Seems there are other means besides 86'ing. Some I guess "lose" certain selections when possible LOL. Yet it's not a serious environment where singing is requisite

Even if it was the worst thing i ever heard in my entire life, i would never tell anyone they can not sing or it sucked.
You don't know if that person has any limitations. You don't know if they have an undiagnosed hearing problem. People can go for years with sight and hearing problems and not know it. Because they think it's normal. Sometimes the sight or hearing lose is very gradual and virtually undetectable. Someone may not know how to read and could be singing from memory. Some people are just 'Slow."
I would never want to insult someone and later find out that they indeed had a "problem."
It's karaoke and you better get use to hearing anything and everything as far as talent level is concerned. You are just the player of songs. You are not the "Almighty Decision Maker."
Food for thought.
Just maybe, that's how everyone hears you....how do you like it?

If this awful singer is affecting the other customers and ultimately the "bar profit" then it is up to the bar management to handle it --just like they would handle any other customer whose actions hindered profit. OR as a KJ you can just ask the singer if they have shix in their ears cause they suck. This may get them to leave and not come back....but then again they may just request PARADISE by the DASHBOARD LIGHTS

But then you as the kj will get the reputation of being a jerk. If the bar asks them to leave, allieviates you from being the jerk.

If someone doesn't like the singer they can GONG them LMAO

Any singer could be gonged for ANY reason (didn't like their sweater, etc.), but the gonger must buy the gongee a drink of their choice. It was very successful until the new owners thought it was unbecoming & canned the gong.

They did the same thing around here. They had radio advertisements for it. As a KJ, i thought that was the most horrible thing that you could do to build a crowd. Tell me what singer in there right mind would want to subject themself to that. PUBLIC humiliation. For what? So people can laugh and make fun of you. How would that ever build a quality crowd or business?
If you want to laugh at people, go to a comedy club. You won't find it at my show.

You've got to put them through and hope the room understands. There are times when I'll have someone (usually a non-singer at the bar) ask me "Why do you even let that one onstage, let alone give 'em a mic?" And I'll explain that that's the nature of the beast.
The truly awful can be entertaining sometimes. There was this one, who no longer comes in, that used to sing that song from "Rent" that has that high flourish at the end....can't remember the name 'cause no one else has ever done it. I'd crank it. The room... they'd visibly duck and you could hear some of them go..."Whoa!!!!" Then they'd slowly return to their drinks and conversation.
I'm a sadistic S#B.

Hello! WOW, can't say I have had someone so bad people complained....just sometimes I get LOUD people...but that's easy to turn the volume down.. ! I did one time have a comedian come in and ask if he could promote his show at the same place where I was playing karaoke, so I didn't see the harm in it and let him on the mic....little did I know, he just keep dropping F-bombs and NO one was laughing and he just kept on going and going....so I just HAD to shut the mic OFF! He didn't like it to much, but I told him I had singers I had to get up and that he was just to promote his show and say A joke and be done....I don't think he likes me anymore... ...actually he doesn't even work at the bar anymore either... !!! Oh well!

The problem is you, like i would think it would be a good idea to promote the bar and the fellow entertainment. But these thnings so many times back fire. So he took over your show and insulted the audience that really wasn't there for comedy night and were not expecting to be subjected to the vulgarity.
Sometimes it doesn't pay to be nice, especially when you don't really know what's coming next.

I always give everybody an equal oppertunity to sing. after all it is karaoke and the bad singers have as much right to sing as the better singers unless they are falling down drunk. then let the batender handle it.

Although painful at times, no matter how bad they are everyone gets to sing in my show.
Last Monday my show was like a magnet for bad singers, I'm telling you baaahd LMAO
With the exception of a few regulars that can sing, it was like a national convention for the singing impaired and the bar quickly emptied within about 45min. Of course the bad singers hung in there about 6 of them, and man it was brutal. We ended up closing the show about an hour early due to slow business. The bartender and I had enough..
Business the past few weeks has been off but normally it's a packed house and much easier to hide the few bad singers we do have in a large rotation.
Mama said there were gonna be nights like this... Thank goodness this rarely happens or I may be finding another secondary income source.

Flipper, what would you do if they became the regulars because they had such a good time and the good singers and listeners evaporated?

I heard this story last night. Another KJ that has a tendancy to be a real jerk, told a singer he could have probably done a better job if he wasn't so drunk. Well they (him & wife) are furious about the comment. (True or not ) They told the bar owner about it and they are trying to drag his crowd over to my show because of it.

Our shows have a lot of bad singers, but most of them get big applause because they come in huge groups. so that's great for us and the bar sales. My rotation stays firm if you sing like a pro or like nails on a chalkboard.

Well we can play what if till you know what freezes over, but that's not gonna happen.
It has not happened in all the years I have been doing my show. Fact is they come and go and there is little you can do about it. Bad singers come along with the territory.
If you have a good show with good singers it balances out. The night I was referring to was a fluke. It happens!
Some folks have no idea they are bad, tone deaf, etc. I'm not gonna tell e'm

EARPLUGS WOULD WORK, OR JUST LEAVE TO GO TO THE BATHROOM...But seriously why do you think it's called K-A-R-A-O-K-E!!! When we have a "bad" singer we tend to go on a bathroom break ect. to be "nice". In Vegas we get ALL types...from all over the world...at least we are not in the Phillipines where a security guard shot and killed a man because he was "aweful". Who knows what will happen so be thankful you had a night without incident.

Oh my. I hope I am NEVER that bad! I used to really hate my voice, but after a couple of years of voice lessons I became more comfortable with it. Sometimes nowadays when I hear a recording of myself I think I sound pretty good. I'm not a BRILLIANT vocalist, but I'm not going to make your ears bleed either. (At least I hope not.)
Anyway, if I'm out at a karaoke place, I HOPE I do a good job (and I sing thru' some warmups in the car), but if I don't, it's not that important. I am there to have fun.

That reminds me.
Years ago, when leaving a show I had never previously attended, the KJ handed me a cassette tape (of my performance).
I anxiously put it into a player when I got home. Quickly, I turned it off and informed my wife that I must either destroy the tape or forgoe singing karaoke. We opted for the former!
Based upon that tape, I would never allow myself to sing again; however, others think my voice is better than tolerable. I'm glad that I'm not amongst those who want to ban bad singers. I hate to have to ban myself. LOL
