That is right on my line of thinking Rufus.... I know the cd/tape output on my Behringer mixer is pre-fader so I connect my recorder to the 'phones output as this is post-fader.
I'm assuming when you said "a Y connector from the main outs as expected gave an identical mix" Jerry, that you were meaning the PA mix and recording mix were the same and not that the recorded mix was the same as the previous recorded mix.
