We have a pretty good crew they dont abuse the books other than folding the front cover under the bottom. Hopefully with the new binders that will be solved.
The waitresses and even singers bring books up to us when we are in the last minutes.

Oh, that behavior doesn't happen often (dropping books) and it is usually a mistake. One of our venues has tall tables with stools - tables are narrow. People try and fit two books end to end on them and inevitably one falls. Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly) often the regulars will quickly pick the book up and apologize. Thank goodness the majority of the people at our shows are regulars - we seldom get that tide of drunken stumblers rolling in.
It's just disheartening with the time that we put into presenting nice books that people mistreat them - accidentally or otherwise. Will go back to the whole library book deal - I guess 'kids' don't learn to use libraries anymore so they're not in the position of borrowing a book. Usually the poor behavior is attributable to ETOH consumption.
Probably once or twice a month, I bring all the books in (they're carried in a big gray plastic tub on wheels) and wipe them all down, replace pages that require it, slide new covers in on those that have gotten wet and bled (I have color cover inserts on binders stating who we are, etc.). I just don't like to go to a show where the books are dirty and not maintained.
Oh, I let 'em know what I've invested in their good times - except I tell them the books cost $50 EACH!

To make my books easier to manage I've separated country and oldies out and put them in a separate book. I only have four of them made up and I keep them with me for request only. They're in perfect shape, and because of what they are they never need to be updated. I won't have to re-do them.
The main books are a mess. The victims of countless spilled drinks. But they're also a mess organization-wise because of all the "Additions" pages that have piled up. So now that the computer thing is behind me I'll gear myself up to tackle them. Probably here at home on my HP printer. I just do even-odd double sided and hope it doesn't jam.
It's the cheapest way to go, and my days have a lot of free time available for a few more weeks.
