Thanks all! Yes, this was an incredible growth experience. Getting affirmation that I can actually sing will go a long way!
One of my good friends and myself are going to search for other area competitions, just for the heck of it. Keeps ourselves on our toes.
Ok, dbk1009...here's what I suggest for your audition...
...As long as it's abridged, a Meatloaf tune would be awesome.
...Brown Eyed-Girl gets killed out here, but if it doesn't in your area, then go for it. I'm not sure how it'll sound a capella.
...Oooh...both good Poison tunes and both would sound awesome. I'd be tempted to go with Something to Believe in, but that's just me. Either own would work.
...Don't Cry by Guns and Roses would work for you, too...given the range of songs you've selected above. Check out some Queen tunes. For some versatility (and the fact you like today's soft rock), have you considered Josh Groban?
If I need to learn something in a hurry, I normally pop the CD in, listen to it a couple times, grab the lyrics and start singing along...over and over and over. Once I feel comfortable, I start singing it acapella. For me, it helps me resolve any issues. Repeat, repeat, repeat, but make sure you take good care of your vocals!
Good luck! Let us know what you choose and how it goes!
