I had a song i wanted to do and every time i would lower the key.   First once and then twice.  I just couldn't get it right.    I tried raising it.   I can sing it perfect up 3. :O  :dancin:

If you can't do them down, (which is the most natural thing to try,) try taking them up.    And sing them in a lower octive.

Kelley, if Bobbie Gentry's original version of "Fancy" ever comes out on karaoke, I might try singing that.  It would be easier for me to sing than Reba's (which I haven't done yet).

Eric (and everyone), last night I tried singing "Town Without Pity" again and I nailed it!!!!! Yeah!!!!!!!!   :oh yeah:   There weren't a whole lot of people there, as it was early in the evening, but they seemed to like it.  I had them lower the key by 4 half-steps (I had been singing it at -3, but I tried -4 this time), and that worked out great--it didn't sound like the track was slowed down or anything like that.  (BTW, when I say I had them LOWER the key, I don't mean that I _sing_ it lower--I sing it _higher_.  But I'm afraid that if they raise the key, the background vocals on the track would just sound ridiculous, 'cause they're so high already, know what I mean?)

I asked one of the kj's beforehand if they'd ever had anyone sing it, and he said, "I've sung it."  I said, "Well, shoot, I oughta just let _you_ sing it."  He replied that his range wasn't what it used to be.  I asked him after I was done singing it, "How did I do?" and he said I did fine.  Of course, maybe he says that to everyone, I dunno...  LOL

I sang it in the car on the way there (just to practice in case I decided to sing it that night).  That seemed to help a lot.  Of course, I don't usually know ahead of time what I'm gonna sing, so I can't practice EVERY song in the car, but I guess if you find a really difficult song like that and you want to get it right, that's a good idea.

The bridge in Eddie Rabbit's Two Dollars in the Jukebox was difficult for me.   Same with Barry Manilows I Don't Want to Walk without You, and Can't Smile without You.

As far as high notes go, has anyone ever tried Andy Gibb's Everlasting Love?  Yikes!

I've never tried any of those (not sure if I've ever even heard the first one), but I can imagine that the other ones would be hard to sing, especially "Can't Smile Without You", which has about a million key changes, give or take a few.  LOL

That reminds me:  The former choir director at our church used to joke about "the obligatory key change" that occurs in a lot of the songs we sang as choral anthems.  Since I'm the pianist there, I pointed out the fact that the obligatory key change usually occurs at the same point as the obligatory page turn!   LOL

Sting's "Fortress Around Your Heart" is very hard for me to sing. Tried it a couple times, finally had to mentally throw it away. He sings the song in like FOUR harmony parts (backing himself up in studio) to the best of my knowledge. When I try to sing it, I can't find the key as I'm all up and down the music spectrum. Sounds good in one key but by the time I'm in the harmonizing parts, I'm totally lost!

Oh, I love that song!  I've never heard anyone sing it for karaoke (I guess you just told me the reason why!).  Hmmm, maybe I'll try it sometime--but thanks for the warning about it being hard to sing.  Sometimes I don't realize how hard a song is until I actually try singing it!
