If you want upbeat, fun, and vocally challenging, try David Lee Roth- Just a Gigilo..

Between the timing, voice bending on notes, and scat parts, it can be impressive.

Brick House , the Comadors  (sp?)
Play that funky music  Wild Cherry (already mentioned)

Disco may have sucked in the late 70s and early 80s, but today its a sure way to pump up a karaoke show.

This post caught my eye and brought back some memories of "days gone by".
I was fortunate, way back when, to actually win 2 (two) contests. I sang "Mack the Knife" the first one, and "MoonDance" the second. The first one was in a place called the "Sand Bar Lounge" up in Lake Winnapasaukee in New Hampshire. The second was at "T's Pub" in Boston. Mostly BU kids there, but thet went nuts when the song started playing, and absolutely crazy at the end. AHHHHHHH.......memories!!! I know those are old songs by today's standards, but done well....they can get er' done.

that's about it. LOL!!!! i really don't do uptempos. Sometimes i'll sing Salsa music. :D

If you like Stevie Wonder, I'd suggest "Superstition" or "Higher Ground"...

For Rob Thomas try, "Smooth" (with Santana) or
"Disease" (Matchbox 20) or
"3 AM" (Matchbox 20) or
"Real World"(Matchbox 20)...

I think I'd try "Disease" or "Superstition" first...

I'd love to be able to sing "Superstition", but no luck (yet!).

Thanks for all those suggestions. I'll look them up. :)

why don't you sing superstition? :P

One of my all time fav songs is Chain of Fools by Aretha. I just love the vibe of the song. Are there any male singers or male songs in that style?

Almost as important as the song....is the ENDING of the song.

Just like others have pointed out on here about using a warmup song to make a great first impression...you need to leave everyone with a great last impression.

If you need to get audience response, you'll do better with a song that has a definite ending...as opposed to one that has an extended fadeout, or even worse, a long instrumental fadeout. (Think American Idol - none of those arrangements have instrumental endings or fadouts).

You could be the second coming of Steve Perry, and do a perfect Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' by Journey...but after two minutes of the na na na na's at the end...it will be zzzzz zzzzz zzzzz zzzzz from the crowd.

I've done Ballroom Blitz in contests, and it generally gets great response, but it has a long instrumental fadeout. So, some people will start clapping when the last line is sung...others don't know it's the last line, and wait to clap & cheer.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a good example. If you nail that entire song, you probably deserve to win whatever contest you're in...but even if you do it "OK"...you can redeem yourself with that final "any way the wind blows..." line. It's one of the easiest lines in the song, but it gives a definite ending to the song...and lets everyone know it's time to start cheering for you!

Bust most important - Have fun - if you seem bored - the crowd will be, too.

from experience, pick your songs base on the other singers, need to know who, how good, and there songs favs.... and always get the crowd pumped, its not always your best songs that win.... got to get the crowd fired up... good luck

I wouldn't advise singing Bohemian Rhapsody in a contest because it's so overdone. No matter how you may do it, it seems to be sung everywhere and you want to do something more fresh.

And it's too long. You don't want to wear out your welcome up there.

I have one singer who does a great job on it, but because of the above reasons it doesn't hold the room's attention.
