And who hasn't been bitten at leat the first time by Poison "Something to Believe In" on SGB, where it is so low you can barely hear it, and then after the 1st verse, the guitar chord BLARES in with an ear splitting sound if it is cranked up....

Here is my formula. A fact seldom mentioned is with a compressor adjusted right the peaks in vocals (or screamers) can be limited and vocal level turned up to hear the full range. The input into the compressor should be at least high enough to be blinking at least one red light. At this threshold the limiter is set to handle most levels. In my case I have a Lexicon 550 in seres with the 266XL It likes unity or slightly below. This is set with the output of the 266XL.  However I like to have the levels set where the mic fader is about -3DB This allows for more gain if needed.  The first critical level is a balance where the singer is heard over the music with little chance of feedback.

Then the music level is brought up under the vocal. Our music fader rides about -6DB and the FX on another channel _25DB. At -6DB all are routed to a Bbe362 which aligns and restores harmonics esp in the vocal range. Last but not least an Aphex 104/204 when adjusted right brings vocals out of the mud in addition to increasing the bass without putting additional strain on  the speakers.

This audio is usable from -20DB to unity on the main faders and can be used as the input to any amp. Even in broadcast stations with balanced 600 ohm audio The only time the audio level is at unity is when there is a constant full level such as a siren although with AVC (automatic volume control) the lows are increased to an audible level.
