I look at the monitor but try to make it look like i'm not.  Will get a line or too & then look around the room, moving from one side of the room where the big screen, to the stage, kind of looking over the monitor there then over to the other side where I have a 19" turned over on occasion.  Alot of the songs I know some of the words, but need some cueing points.
When I played in bands, if you make a mistake, yeah, we used the I meant to do it that way - you had to, otherwise you can get flustered & make it worse - not good in a live situation, just trounce along & turn the mistake into a working line without showing the mistake.  I once repeated the first verse of a song twice while playing live, oh well, my band was laughing though, so much for covering up the mistake!

Even the pros have stage monitors with the lyrics for quick reference. Seems as though the more "technologically advanced" we become, the less we reley on our own inate (like we USED to have too ) abilities.

And then there's those Pros that just lip-synch the whole show!  LMAO

Hey! Now there's an idea... my own "karaoke" disks that I take along to a show which have my vocals on already... Then I could drink all the beer I wanted and still "sing" (read lip-synch) my turn in the rotation!.... cooool!  LMAO

Heck karaoke is for fun right? I had to memorize lyrics when I was in a band and I hated that part of it. I'm no natural. Now I can relax and read the words off the screen. Yeah baby !

The funny part is even the songs I know by heart I'll still look at the screen.

I know you were being funny, but that actually seems like a pretty darn good idea! Rudy

Many years ago, when I was a young kid, I used to listen to my mother and her friends singing traditional songs. Those songs are long and some are so long that it may take up to 7 nights to finish it. They take turn to sing different verses. And they have no lyric sheets infront of them. I wish I have that kind of memory for song.

Karaoke makes memorizing lyric redundant. In most places here tv monitors are placed and spaced in such a way that which ever a singer face he will have at least one lyric mon facing him. So you can pretend to not see the mon by moving about and still be facing a mon.

I NEED the lyric monitor for the lyric and the sweep to help me in the timing. If I can do without it I would be singing in a band.
