I went halfway across this country with nothing but dreams and a couple of bucks. Learned how to find the local churches for a handout and find the local mission. To this day I can spot a traveler on the road take them to the mission and give them a ten or so. This experience can give one a full appreciation of life..
I will start another thread about one experience while on the road. This is only one of many..

I think that in most rural areas, the people are pretty hospitable. In the cities, not so much.
My wife was a city girl. Born on the South Side of Chicago. She moved away when she was 17, but was in cities of 50,000 or more for a long time. Then she married me and moved to the sticks.
Now that we have lived in small-town and rural America for coming on 15 years, she returns to the city and finds people looking at her funny. Then she realizes she is talking and passing the time of day with them like she was back home in our little town of 2,000 people. People in cities just don't get that friendly that fast -- it isn't safe.
My daughter Kari lives in Arlington Heights, near Chicago. When she came here for the first time to visit, she started developing relationships with some of the locals. She was in this little bait/convenience store one day when a lady came in and said she had ran out of gas. The lady who owns the store, Diana, tossed car keys to her and said "Here, take my Chevy and go get some gas." When Kari asked her how she knew the lady, she said -- "Oh, I don't know her name, but I think I saw her in here once." It just about knocked my daughter for a loop -- she couldn't believe that she had just given the lady her car keys. But that is kind of how it is in rural Indiana.

I'm sure every country has their stereo types. I've always been told the French are snobby and impolite. Cultural difference play a part in this I'm sure. I try to not judge people by their nationality or race. Every individual is different.

NZ has special opinions about the french. The are considered cowards. Also they two of their special agents who were sent to disable the rainbow warrior (greenpeace ship that was actively trying to stop the atomic testing on an atoll in the pacific) blew it up killing the person on it.
They were arrested and tried in NZ, sent to jail and sadly political wrangling ensued and they were sent home after serving a very short period of their actual sentence...french heirachy promised they would be encarcerated in France, but they arrived home to a heros welcome

Actually the French are extremely polite. They are very formal in many ways -- they can't stand the instant familiarity that so many Americans have.
If you are polite, say "merci" and "sil vous plait" a lot, they are very friendly and helpful. They almost always speak more English than they casually admit, and they will open up and use it if you just try to speak a few words of French first.

I have travelled around the USA a bit, spent some time in Canada ( BC ) Mexico, the caribbean and what you generally get from travelling are just random encounters and not a true representation of how people really are from those areas.
A friend at work had an exchange student from Madrid Spain and she brought her older sister to stay for a while. We ended up going out and she was amazed at having the doors opened for her while getting in cars or going into restaurants. She also wanted to pay for half of everything since she said that the men from where she was from expected something in return if they paid for everything. She was very impressed with southern hospitality.
My ex was from Canada, so I have heard and seen both sides of how socialized medicine compares with what we have, there is no perfect answer, both have their good and bad. Rudy.

I for one can't stand the french, and yes I DELIBERATLY didn't capitalize that name. Sad part is that's part of my heritage...
The french have routinely snubbed the US and then want to still be treated as our allies... makes me wanna puke!

not when public opinion there is 85-90%... that to me is a VERY high majority.
Sure there's good people in every country! I'm just saying I feel the french as a country shouldn't be our allies anymore! As far as I'm concerned they can even take back the statue of liberty!

People are the same all over the world - you have the good and the bad. Just because we went to war doesn't make us horrible people. That was a govermental decission and I think most other countries realize this. I here more what you said Vicki that they don't like our president.
It was more than a little amusing walking around Times Square and The Rockefeller Centre on Monday afternoon, noting all the shops displaying the count-down to Bush's leaving office.
