I'm not going to buy any of these anytime soon myself, but I'd like to know what to get when the time comes. I know that factories using 100s of KW sometimes use power conditioners. Power conditioner is a very generic term. So what are you saying karyoker? Is there a difference between the quality of power from one of those 2kw vs the 6.5 kw? Yamaha claims their EF2400is can run microcomputers and can handle spikes of 25a/3Kw for 10 seconds. It is light and quieter than all the others (58db max), even the higher powered ones according to the specs. 2 of them together would run 4kw easy I would think. But I don't know. Trying to figure this one out for future information.

I was referring to the little rack mount power conditioner. I never did like calling them that. A true power conditioner will compensate for small changes in frequency and will crowbar spikes in a few microseconds. In our TV transmitter room with 600 amp service we had one that would handle about anything but it cost about $20 k...

wow, the power goes up and the noise actually goes down slightly!

This is a generally true statement about power generation. It is very difficult to maintain regulation at low power levels, which is wny most low-power generators are not serious candidates for running things like pro audio equipment.

I have a 4KW generator that I push a 2200W UPS with, which gives me good enough power for computers.

Actually, the real problem may be the 1/2 wave rectifier board in the cheaper generators.

The typical 120 VAC portable will output 12 VDC also.. To do that, they rectify the AC signal using a diode board.. To rectify both sides of the AC Sine wave requires two sets of diodes.... An added expense.. Sometimes, this is skipped..

This allows noise to bang around on the AC side.. Difficult to remove..

As to the UPS, that's the perfect solution for noise.. And power spikes.. The batteries act like a giant capacitor.. Removing noise and voltage spikes.. (Up and down)

However, a cheap UPS typically has a slow switch over time.. Buy a good UPS..

so does anyone have any experience with those yamahas? that 2400 seems to be the best bang for total power, power spikes, noise, and weight combined. but i have heard such good things about the honda i'd be hesitant to buy the yamaha.

I have a gig that MAY turn into a permanent gig.

I think the Yamaha invertor generators are definately the way to go, but I'm not quite ready to drop $1000 on one, so I think I may go ahead and rent this time (Home Depot rents the same generator for $65/day), and buy if I can get a contract out of this deal.

Thanks all!!
