The Good - The Bad - and The Ugly

Karaoke is amateur entertainment at its best!

If it ain't fun for the crowd, the host isn't doing their job!

Stick in a change of pace, comical song, or try a little scary-oke, and have everybody sing a song they have never tried for one rotation.

What ever helps get the karaoke virgins performing will probably create a regular down the line!

Most of all - make everybody sound as good as you possibly can, back them up if they are nervous, and don't sing too much as a host, unless the rotation needs you!

It's been a business, doing pleasure with you!

It seems like quite a few KJ's have issues with the better than average singers that show up at their venues. Why are they all considered divas or wannabes? Can't they just be people that only enjoy singing and they just happen to be very good at it? I'm not talking about the people who only show up for contests. I'm talking about people who show up every week just because they like to sing and hang out with their friends. It just seems strange that there would be so much resentment towards the people that are the best at a particular activity, through no fault of their own. If someone were to be the best bowler in their bowling league; I would think that he or she would be admired for his or her skill and not disparaged for being a show off. There seems to be a great deal of jealousy when it comes to karaoke. The "have nots" resent the "haves" for having some talent to sing better than the rest.

I would think that the better KJ's would not have issues with any one level of singing ability that is displayed during a show, unless they are under the impression that they have a superior vocal talent, and are somewhat threatened by the really good singers!

They are there to keep the show as entertaining as possible, and in my experience a newbie that has the gonads to get up in front of 100 people and sing somewhat off, or below what the KJ and Idol Wannabe's think the standard should be, will probably get a better ovation than either of the afforementioned.

In Karaoke, its the mix of talent that keeps most entertained, and wanting that 3 minute rush that you get by performing in a live venue. Let all talent levels have that 3 minutes of fame, without prejudice by the KJ, that keeps a fair rotation, and goes out of their way to make each performer feel special, and you will see a professional entertainer, that keeps a smile on the faces of the patrons, and management/owners/employers beating down the doors to hire you, and or to keep you and your show!

Here's the fun side of it... In a city where you know No One, you can go up and sing and be you. The best part as an example was Wed Night this week singing at a place, a group of people were having a blast. After I sang an 80's song, one of the group came up and asked if I could do Pour Some Sugar on Me for them? Sure I said and as I started I said "hey this is for the crazies back there having a good time" Fun stuff...

Yesterday morning I'm eating breakfast with a co worker at the hotel and one guy comes past me and says "nice job last night", Co worker looks at and didn't say anything, another lady comes by and says "great singing", Then I realized that group stayed at the same hotel and another one comes by and says "Thanks for doing the song for us"

My co worker then had the light go off in his head and said where did you go last night?? His hotel he manages is right across the street from the place to sing...

See I'd rather go to Karaoke to sing with people I will most likely never see again "except in this case" than go to something like a strip club when out on the road. That's why I enjoy them personally and auditions would be a foolish thing for any vendor or bar owner....

Never heard that rumor - auditioning for karaoke...... You sure someone didn't confuse something for the audition of American Idol when they were up here?

I remember something about this being mentioned many years ago on the (now defunct) JOLT Forum. I think Traci T may have brought up the subject. I seem to recall that she said this KJ was set up in a Mall, and he had people audition for him elsewhere before he allowed them to sing at the show in the Mall.

Sometimes the really good singers are quite boring to hear repeatedly (and they seem to be the ones with only a certain set of songs- no variety)

Ain't that the truth. If I only did the same 3 songs every time I went to karaoke I'd be really really good too.

Not necessarily true. I've seen some poor singers perform the same song week after week, year after year, and they still showed no improvement.
