I quit a Tuesday night gig a couple of years ago because the bartender kept closing early on slow nights, and wanting me to accept half pay. I wouldn't do it. I still have a Sat. night gig there, and there is no problem.
I now let all venue owners know that I require three hours notice if they have any schedule changes. I'll usually work with them if there are things out of their control, like power outages and such. No working for "partial pay" if it's something of their choosing.
It's also worth noting that if you have a hired host running a show for you, they expect to be paid. Any "half pay" scenario there would make the show essentially free. Since I pay my host full pay, I expect the same.

"I play for free, I CHARGE for setting up, breaking down, driving to and from. buying music ( not cheap unles you are a pirate and if you are go burn in hell) buying and maintaining gear, making song books, updating song books, dealing with drunks, etc.etc."
