This is a question for Lonman:

I've read several of your posts with regards to mic compressor where you stated that it's best to plug the mic compressor (such as the dbx166/dbx266) into the insert jacks of the mic channels on the mixer.
You also stated that if the mixer does not have inserts (such as the Alesis Multimix), then it is possible to place the compressor in-line (mic-compressor-mixer) but the result would not be as effective.

Could you please elaborate a bit more when stating "not as effective"?
e.g. is it a significant loss of vocal quality or loss of compression effect or does it just require more tweaking and tuning at the compressor level or else...?

Appreciate other users who have experiences with mic compressors add-on as well...

Basically more tweaking/tuning. Again it will work, just not as good as it could via inserts.

Thanks Lonman
I enjoy reading your replies and I respect your opinion!

My gut tells me mackie

Anyone else?

I own a Mackie and it's solid but because of their reliability issue in the past years on some of their models and the fact that you can get much better, I recommend Allen & Heath like this one:

Do a search... A & H have better mic inputs and the sound  can't compare

How about Carvin mixers (made in San Diego USA).
Heard that their mixers are nice and well made (but no built-in compression though):

- S16 USB ($300) with built-in 22W/22W amp - 2-stereo channels recording:

- C844U USB ($370) - Concert 44 Series 2-stereo channels recording - praised by users from carvinbbs forum:

The S16 is more for studio work & not so much live - it would work for it but better suited in the studio.
The C844U is a nice board, our band had the 32 channel model without any complaints - thing is built like a tank, dual effects built in. 4 Aux sends so one could send multiple individual monitor mixes - handy in a live situation.
