Well, I sang a bunch of songs last night. We only had 3 singers so I ended up being part of the entertainment. I tried to keep the mic off my lips and 1-3 inches away. Occasionally I found mt self going back to my bad habit and forced myself to back off.

I used both the Audio Technica and the Nady DKW DUO. Both sounded very good and performed fine.

I usually take the integrated systems bungee approach. Since mic A will usually sound different on KJ B and KJ C's system. Depending on the nature of vocals any mic could could be a good fit, or not. I usually prefer corded because the sibilants come out better. Then you can straight or off axis the mic to get different sounds. I treat it like an instrument in itself. Along with the voice as another part and then close my eyes and listen to the overall mix and balance. I move the mic around and try to make it sound like the artist. That is how well you can blend in to the music on the sound system with all the monitoring & etc. This is where I can vary the distance. In other words you have to play mixer with the sound when you vary the distance. If you want a Jim Morrison or Billy Idol scream then keep it close. Sometime Johnny Cash sounds weak because of the mic or system response. If you want something intimate then keep it close and use lots of sibilants so it sounds like you're whispering in the audiences ear. If you do a faded scream then hold it away and ride the balance for effect. You may hold it up and out axially for a sustained pure tone. It is how much volume you put out and how loud you want it to sound. The mixer gain setting on the mic can vary as as well but the end product is how it sounds. Use your ears.
