I've got news for you, your "friend" is a liar. 30 cheaper? 45 dollars? You shouldve held firm. If he had someone half the quality of you who'd do it for 45 dollars, he'd have hired them.
My beliefs:
1) Loose fun show.
2) Firm prices.
Yeah couple that with the whole leveraging people against one another. People get paid crap because they allow it. I'm having a bit of a time getting gigs for my partner because I won't go below $150 for weeknights and $200 for Friday or Saturday. There's a couple of guys in town running $100/$125. He's not making enough and has to run shows 7 nights a week to get paid what he could if he adhered to a better fee structure. He could work 4 nights and make the same money if he were smart about it.
Additionally I've had people come to me for parties only after I overpriced myself out of the market. The other guy "can't be good if he charges so little" so I make sure I charge a hefty penny and stand firm. 50% of the time I get the gig and I make twice as much as the guys I've lost them to. I figure I break even for less work which is a huge win for me
