I've been a DJ 20+ years but the KJ thing only started 15 months ago. I started with-

VocoPro mixer
American Audio CD+G Player
13' CRT TV
DOD EQ
Mackie Amp
Yamaha speakers (MON&FOH)
EV mics
Road Ready Rack
2700 songs all Chartbuster

Now-

Numark C3 mixer
Numark DMC 2 controller
Alesis mixer(w/ effects)
Sony Viao laptop
17" flat screen
DBX EQ
Mackie Amp
JBL Monitors
B 52 powered speakers
EV & Shure mics
Road Ready Rack
5100+ songs mostly Chartbuster & Sound Choice

I hope to go wireless on the mics and a driverack next.

Mojo

My first system had the following:

1 Yorkville DJM806 Powered Mixer

2 Yorkville Y150 Speakers

1 JVC Triple Tray Player

1 Audix OM2 Mic

2 Samson R21 Mics

As for my CDG's I already had a collection of personal discs (around 150 of them) and I added another 2500 songs to those and that was enough to get me started. Then I put everything I made for the next 2 years into new CDG's to build my library and pay for my system. I invested approx 25K in my first 2 years in the business

Once I hit the 3rd year I finally began to enjoy the money that came from the business and I still set aside 10-20% for equipment and music upgrades each year from that point on. That decision served me well.

Now I have 3 systems all digital, and paid for. I rent 2 of them out occasionally and use one system for myself. If I ever lose my fulltime job I can ramp up the karaoke to make my living.
