I talked to a few people this weekend and it's SLOW all over --people are just not partying like they used to. I'll start to visit some places and see if I can land a gig even if its for the summer months. There are a lot of "seasonal" bars etc on the Jersey Shore that may want some type of entertainment (Karaoke).

Sorry to hear this Jam - best of luck in finding something, even temporarily. Those often lead to permanence. Pretty bad when news says "things are looking up, only 539,000 jobs lost last month." If you are in what is considered a vacation area, I can understand that things are way down. Everybody I know has canceled any plans at all for vacations other than the occasional weekend away. This can only benefit us where we are because they still want to have some fun, and our winters tend to be so long that summer brings renewed optimism...maybe they can forget about their financial situations briefly? Who knows...Just have to keep on keepin' on.

Our club has been alot slower than normal the last few months, we get a hit & miss large crowd/rotation combos, but nothing like we normally get regularly. I do know alot of people that have been laid off that used to come in steadily, don't come in or come in maybe once every couple weeks - some I know moved out of state for new job opps.
This is the first time I am actually anticipating losing a couple of the slower days over the summer. Nothing has been said and we have been through dry spells in the past, but something is gnawing in my brain about this year for some reason!

Ditto, Lon - interestingly our gigs have withstood so far, and the newest one is flourishing amazingly well. I'm crossing my fingers, though - and keep booking weddings as quickly as I can.

We have been up and down and up and down trying to get our show up in numbers. But karen's observation of the warmer weather making people feel more optimistic could help in the coming months. We actually had 20 people last Sat instead of the usual 11 to 15 and some of them said they had stayed home all winter and were just getting the "going out" feeling again. But I know it's going to be a hard road for a bit. Oddly enough, we are getting our first party inquiries also and while we weren't going to head that way when we started out, I guess we will "adapt."

Private parties are where the money is at. You can usually get 3-5x your normal club rate on a single show.

I had wanted to have more experience first and back-up equipment before going that route. I know I don't want to deal with the Bridzilla thing yet. But starting off with more casual events with people we know from the show seems like a good way to get started. I think right now it's "adapt or die."[/quote]

You don't necessarily have to do weddings - I personally won't for karaoke or karaoke/dj. But casual & corporate functions (especially corporate bid higher) are what I prefer as far as private gigs go.
