Dr....
Personally, I think it is rather cool to have someone 'any kind' that is famous at your shows and I would certainly have done the same thing if that was the situation. Again, the are NO Rules...Just Right! Switch, change, adapt...on the fly!

My first experience with karaoke was with a host that was an opener in Vegas with the biggies. Even she was under contract and could not sing at public events for that violated her contracts. If a biggie did attend your show it is unlikely they would sing.

Most of the KJ's here routinely profess about how fairly they run a rotation. FAIR means FAIR all of the time. If the guy really wanted to sing his "hit", he would have filled out his first song slip with his hit song on it. He obviously didn't want to sing it .....(he's probably sick of singing it) because he put a different song on his song slip. I don't know how long the rotation was at this function but would it have killed Rick to wait for his next turn to come around......like EVERYONE ELSE had to do ????

WOW you let someone sing 2 songs in a row
The blogger is just ...trying to be heard and make a controversy out of nothing
really ..... If you have any type of recording artist at your KARAOKE show its a big deal and should have the rules bent ..A LITTLE

It's why I don't print "The Rules" anywhere. They're just a loose confederation of guidelines that keep order (sometimes!).

My boyfriend says that if Shania Twain walks into our show, she's singing EVERY song.

Dr Fred let a person sing 2 songs in a row because he was a celebrity singer?
I talked to the karaoke police and they said since it's your first offense they'd let you off with just a warning.

Duuuuuude! Now that rocks! The two song in a row thing... hmmm... 50 lashes with a wet noodle!!
I say go for it.
Funny, after reading this thread I HAD to try this song out (at home... heh, heh). I'm always looking to add something with a nice dance beat to my list, and I've NEVER heard this done karaoke... go figure.
I was right that it's not all that challenging vocally, but it does have some interesting syncopation. I would also say the way the chorus repeats itself... especially at the end, man, this is a serious endurance test!! When singing something like this I can't stay still either... This song needs a warning!!
Smokers beware... this song may cause you to turn blue and pass out!!

I've sung it twice. The first time I massacreed it--like you say, it has some syncopation and I thought I knew it a lot better than I really did. I'm not sure I did it that well the second time either.

I can't believe the thought process some of you have. If ANY multi-million album selling singer came into my KARAOKE show, I'd let them sing as long as the audience allowed. I would announce them, put in their song, and let them do what they do. We're not talking about a LOCAL band here, but a singer who had a "#1" top of the charts hit AROUND THE WORLD, and sold multi-million copies of his debut album. ANYONE that wouldn't want that kind of bragging rights to have this guy sing a couple of songs (out of turn) at their show would have to be an idiot. After all, aren't we just letting people entertain other people with OUR equipment? If one of my regulars got offended because I let a REAL recording star sing a few songs, I'd tell them, "when you make a recording that sells that many copies, I'll let you sing a few out of turn too." If that isn't good enough, they know where the door is, and there are no chains on anybodies feet.

I totally agree with you Rosario. If George Strait or Willie Nelson or some other local TOP STAR walked into my show I would hand them the mike and let 'em go till they wanted to stop. If the crowd didn't like it then too bad. It's my show and I will run it the way I want. It's only one night, not like it's going to happen all the time and just might be good for business as word got around that "HEY this KJ is so good so and so dropped by to sing"

Interestingly, most of the famous singers are under contract with someone and aren't permitted to perform without contract (spontaneously) - this occurred with us at Sturgis - jam time, one of the Lynyrd Skynyrd guys gets up and plays his harp - you would NOT believe the hassle to get that undone. Nobody would have noticed except there were pics and video.

I'd only blog pissed because that's usually one of my closers for the night. I'd hate to get songblocked by Rick Astley.
good thing Brad Nowell is dead so I can still close with Date Rape.

It's funny how some people would complain about a famous singer sing 2 or more songs in a row at a karaoke show, would spend $50-100+ to watch them in concert. People, you're getting a mini concert for free, plus in our case you actually got to sing with them.
Who wouldn't enjoy such a once in a liftime opportunity.

I agree with you Tim. Successful entertainers will add to YOUR "entertainment value" as a host and should be treated a little better to add that value. And concert tickets here are getting out of control expensive.
Earlier posts from some here seem to indicate that they're either worried about being upstaged, are afraid to upset the "delicate balance of rotation/average singer" by breaking their own silly madeup unecessary rules, or are serious karaoke-nazis and need absolute control over their shows to show they're the boss...complex.
Karaoke is just karaoke, and entertainment. Trying to control the entertainment 100% of the time is ridiculous. It needs to be guided, but is by nature, unscripted.
Let the real entertainers add value to your show, it's a good upsell tool in the future, most celebs i've i let sing tipped extremely well, and management was very happy with the added attention the venue received.
Treat the celebs like they're accustomed to and they may recommend other people to your venue in the future. Treat 'em like they're average and most of them won't ever come back.
MOST regular karaoke people don't mind. After all, they get their place back when things return to normal the following week, or day. Some "hosts" here crack me up!

I'd be happy to have a singing celeb come into a gig of mine... if they wanted to sing more than "a turn", I'd mack it up on the microphone and get the whole place howling for them to get special treatment.
I do that with birthday folks... hey, that's their one night of being a celeb.

Maybe he should show up in the Milwaukee area. Most shows are two songs in a row.
