I should have told Ultra Diva to get a great pair of shoes instead.

Sort of off track but I am not a "good" singer and I usually enjoy it when a show has some pros visiting. It is all in the attitude as far as if they are intimidating or not. Have seen a few that would be resented but only because they made comments like, "No one should have to listen to this," as they walked out when someone was butchering a song they usually did. Or the one we get who said, "I know," when my boyfriend told her, "Wow, you're good." The real killer is when the host decides to give the pro a second song because they are so good. The crowd can turn from admiration to resentment really quickly on that one.
The ones that everyone liked always mingled no matter what the level of the other singers and pretty much actied like they understood what karaoke was all about and they were there to enjoy themselves. Some of them even gave pointers if asked.
They would also be polite about other people's efforts. Some of the things said to me were, "We enjoyed your performance," "You always put a lot of energy into your song and it is entertaining," etc. Never had to lie about singing ability but were congenial anyway. I would have hated for these people to have stayed away because they felt they were intimidating. They really added to the show and the fun.

I agree ! My audience loves a great singer. Pro or not. Oneofakind you'd be welcome with open arms. Don't forget the shoes though.
The only time a singer is disliked good or bad is when they themselves are disliked. If someone walks around like Their crap don't stink they'll be shunned.
We had an Elvis impersonator come in passing his business card out to everyone and telling everyone how wonderful he was. After he sang you could hear a pin drop. Total primadona too. Sang an Elvis song then when no one clapped began complaining over the mic I put the song in the wrong key. Like I choose the key. Dah !

Yet another reason I don't want to be any of my singers' "friend".
I'm like your karaoke bartender: look to me for an encouraging word, to "mix" your karaoke "drink" perfectly and give you a round of applause when you finish.
Other than that I don't want to know about your personal life, see you after work or outside the establishment that employs me.
In my experience, there is a contingent of karaoke singers who are lonely miscreants. They like the instant acceptance that going to a karaoke bar provides them. I'm not there to be their "rent a friend". That's not being unfriendly - that's keeping a "professional distance" anymore than you'd want your waiter to pull up a chair and dine with you.
As for this woman, I'd say you handled it well and got more involved than I would have.

(summing it all up.... sounding like Andy Roonie or whatever his name is/spelled... )......I guess singing is a lot like sex, when it comes to the strange faces we make.....maybe instead of trying to get the crowd behind me, I'll get behind the crowd.....call it karaoke doggy style...... ...ps.....by the way, my wife told me it's because she hates to see me having a good time........

OMG...THAT is exactly why I stopped going to shows. I've been a host and a karaoke goer so I agree...Letting someone go twice in a row is SUCH a HUGE NONO! Never EVER do it! PERIOD!! The host at the last show I went to made me do 2 in a row and I do mean literally made me- as in wouldn't call up the next singer until I did... this is after we argued pretty loudly for a few minutes about it on stage. The people around us were telling me to just sing so he'd get on with the show .. so...the second song was "we are family" and I made as many girls as would fit on the stage get up to sing the song with me and I basically vamped over THEM singing the song. but I was STILL very uncomfortable! ...then an hour or so later when we were ready to leave- I went and asked for my disks back- that freakin KJ held my disks hostage until I did another one!!....he was seriously pushing for a 4th when I made my husband -who looks like Lou Ferrigno- go GET my freakin CD'S! Even then his skinny azz tried to talk my huge husband into letting me stay to do another one. yeah it's flattering that he liked me...but heavens! I was just there for karaoke- not a concert and there were TONS of people waiting to sing. I think the only thing that saved me from being stoned by that crowd was that it was soo obvious that I did NOT want to sing more than one song. PLUS...hey I was "off" that night...where'd he get the idea that I was in the mood for a concert?

Dan - I love your new pic. The mic rocks! I definitely see your point. If I worked large venues I'm sure my style would be less personal.
Oneofakind - Oh my gosh ! That KJ had a noodle loose. I never force anyone to sing, no matter who they are.

As for the mic, I don't use it in my karaoke show, but do for my DJ work.
