Nobody hears it except for the person with the headphones. I sometimes do this when they are not sure if it is even the song they think it is, or which version is better. It's easy to do from time to time thanks to the mixer. Felix the KJ
But again, you are set up to do so. Probably 90% of the shows i've ever been to do not even have the capability - and in some cases the knowledge to be able to so.

I've been very lucky and satisfied lately, with Zoom, Monster Hits, and Radio Starz for new additions- Radio Starz in particular. I rate SBI about even with Top Hits/Stellar/Panorama
I no longer even look for SC.
Since MJ passed yesterday, of course I had a bunch of people TRYING to sing his stuff. Well, here's an example for Tovmod:
One guy insisted he use his MJ disc, and you guessed it- a Backstage/Ovation frisbee. The worst version ( and lowest recording level, I might add) I have ever heard. Yet that was his choice. So for Tovmod: The "best" version is the one the singer prefers.
BTW- Even Backstage/Ovation has a few good tracks- Some Neil Diamond, some Eagles, a few Doors, etc... just not a mfr. I'd trust in general.

yeah, I've gone on record here that I might not approve of a version that a singer wants to sing, but if they know it, they know the timing, the background vocalists and are comfortable with it... hey, it's THEIR five minutes!
Good buddy of mine back in Portland had the BS Billy Joel disc. I absolutely hate it (in my opinion, it only has one good song on it), but this is the one that HE has, and HE knows the songs and those versions... so despite the fact I have superior tracks, he wanted to sing off that blasted disc! Ugh!

Is Radio Starz still putting out new music? Do they have a website? Are they in the UK?

Quote: o doubt there are some SC clunkers. But the majority of their tracks are reliably good. There is just something about the clarity of the instrumentation as it is amplified that seems to stand out for me. We had a singer attempt a Heart song the other night and although she was struggling, I found myself thinking that this particular track really rocked to the point of being exhilarating. I don't work for them and we have a lot of other brands that I buy that I like. But I can't deny that SC is one of the best for reliability when it comes to rock.
I'll bet that song was "magic man" Soundchoice KICKED AZZ om that one fir sure! The dang TRACK was so good I had to learn the song!LOL! Tim- one of the guys that makes the tracks for sound choice is a friend of mine..I used to call him up and pester him to make certain songs for me Haven't done that in a LONg time! Maybe I should!
I've always thought Sc was the best overall...but have also been impressed with Radiostarz... but they were so limited in their selection. Also really like the big band serioes pocket songs came out with--all real intruments! Sounds Soooo good!

The Heart song was "Alone." Will have to check out the other one.
Re the karaoke that uses the original backing (doesn't Taylor Swift do that?): It would be great for current songs. Some of the originals karaoke I have were recorded in the lower tech years and even though the arrangement is obviously 100% accurate as it's the original, it doesn't quite have the Hi Fidelity sound.

Taylor Swift - be it her or the record company - has released BOTH her albums in karaoke format. Walmart I know has them.

So
A singer you have never seen before confidently takes the stage at your show
He mentions that he has never done karaoke before and hasn't sung the song he selected in public since his high school talent show
You are not that familiar with the song and while you have 3 versions of it you cue up SC
Not too much into the song you realize it is a train wreck and by the efforts of the singer you KNOW the track is pretty bad
The song ends and the singer looks at you like you must be ther DJ from hell to do what you did to him
He'll not likely sing karaoke again anytime soon
Are you going to compound the problem further by telling him you use the absolute BEST manufactured tracks in the business
If you do he'll not likely sing karaoke ever again!

YES, thats exactly what would happen if it's a song I didn't know, and I trusted SC.

That is one reason when I am hosting I do not sing one of my songs all the time. If I screw up I laugh and relax everybody. When you expect to nail every song and act as if it is the performance of your life you never will really sing it at your full potential. When you relax and go with your gut and sing with your heart then you will know how to sing.
Then you will not worry about what others are thinking or their judgement. There are songs like "Cry" that I absolutely murdered about 20 times then one night you reach that higher note and it falls together. It's like playing golf. Or beating the water to a froth then that big fish finally hits your lure.
In that case I would have announced over the mic Hey not bad for not singing that in 40 years! Then I would have talked to him and explained the process.

clunkers are always going to be a reality, unless of course the artists would release their soundtracks to be used for karaoke purposes.
I have several thousand songs in my library that have never been played so I'm still finding clunkers all the time. There are only 300-500 songs that get played out of thousands of choices yet I try to have the best versions for those songs available. My opinion of the best versions may not be the same as the next person so there will always be a margin for error. Example: I have 5 versions of Patsy Cline's "Walking After Midnight" and every time I suggest a version it is not the right one, it's either too slow or too fast for the singer. I won't even give a recommendation on that song anymore as it depends on the person and their personal preference.
For the most part SC is the most reliable for quality and is my go-to choice. I have been wrong a few times, but for the most part it is a logical choice.
Using original soundtracks would solve this problem altogether but that is not a reality. Karaoke will never be a perfect world when it comes to versions of songs. NEVER
So unless the singers are willing to research and purchase the karaoke tracks that suit their tastes they will have to put up with a few clunkers here and there.

Bartender asked me to sing MY SACRIFICE by CREED tonight. I didn't have my Sound Choice CD with me so I had to sing the version that the KJ had listed in his book with only a number with no idea what brand of karaoke I would be singing from. Song comes up on the screen and I see NorthStar Pop and I know I'm in for some trouble. The music was horrible. The KJ turned it up a little louder and the guitars sounded even worse. I'll take my chances with Sound Choice over any other brand of karaoke discs every time. It's just too bad that Sound Choice has dropped the ball as far as production of new material goes.

Thank you Knightshow
That's most of my point! Most of the rest of what I am saying I believe you also mentioned earlier -- do what the Asians do
Otherwise we have far from a perfect service to offer the unsuspecting public and can only talk about quality in relative terms ----- SC is us usually better than others, but not always and not necessarily when it comes to country tracks, and SBI, Zoom and Radio Staarz are pretty good anmd so forth

If I might add: I sing a lot of Elvis- MOST of SC's versions are the worst I've ever heard. I truly don't believe Elvis himself could sing their version of "Devil In Disguise"....

If it was a song that I was absolutely not familiar with nor ever played & I had 3 versions, yes I would most likely pick the SC version first (unless it was country & I also had it on ChartBuster). If the song was horrible, I would then tell the singer afterward I have a couple other versions they can try next time. I never stay necessarily with one brand nor would I ever tell a singer that is the best version. I explain that different versions are like going to see a cover band live. Some really sound like the original, while others kind of just muddle through! If they never sing again because of a bad track that I didn't know was bad, well, can't help that.

yep, there's no doubt about that. I prefer the Pioneer or Music Maestro versions of ANY Elvis song over SC.
The majority of the stuff I have from SC are the wonderful headbanger discs as well as the 70s & 80s pop/rock, the occasional "best of 2001" kind of discs... and a few scattered here and there. In their foundation and brick sets, they compliment a KJ's collection, providing an excellent core. BUT I'm the first to admit that CB seems to nail the country better, and even does a great job on the 50s stuff...
anytime you have "covers" or a reproduction, you're going to NOT have the song the same as the original. Here in America, that's what we're stuck with! Trying to get the best version we can.
I will say that when I discover said klunkers, they're the first to be replaced. I do have a lot of dupes as I started out buying a few discs here and there, and quickly upgraded some discs to SC when I got the chance. Then I had the chance to get the Pioneer cdgs and lasers, so those are my primary "core"... But they're not available for a new kj for the most part, so you do what you have to do!

The MM Velvet Elvis series is excellent. We use them in Elvis Tribute Shows.

SC's track A Fool Such AS I by Elvis is terrible. Listen to the backup singer who starts it off. He sounds like he's on his death bed.
Then listen to DK 's same track. No comparison DK is better.

As far as Elvis, I rate it MM #1, SuperCore ( who has used racks from MM AND DK) number 2, then DK. SC should have just skipped Elvis
