If you're running on disk only then title is certainly useful. I personally no longer print any books by title. If you know the name of the song I'll pull it up for you on the system and we'll see who sings it.

I know laptops are the thing to carry. They are so convenient and lightweight. I started my show using a laptop and ran it that way for about 3 years. My husband does computer repair work, and he urged me to go to a desktop. Just about any problem that happens in a desktop can easily be fixed right there on the spot by popping out the bad part and popping in a good one. And it has worked great for me, since now they sell very small compact towers. I don't use a full-size tower. I have had issues when a memory chip would go out, and I would figure out which one was bad and take it out. My show carried on fine. If my laptop had a problem back then, I was out of luck, unless I had a back-up in my car. Now I just carry a few back-up parts instead.

that's long been my belief as well. I can fix the desktops. I can swap out $25-200 parts by the next day if necessary.
Just about everyone on here that's running laptops says they have another in case of a problem... while it's the same principle, I prefer to do the work myself, far cheaper in the long run.
Besides, the tower unit I have holds the monitor and the mousepad! ! Doesn't hurt my back being bent over all the time! Unless I'm looking at slips, and I'm thinking of going whiteboard if I ever get a steady gig going!

I use 3 artist and 3 title. I can tell the artist ones get used more cause the slips need to be replaced more often in the artist books. I also keep an artist book on a table next to the stage, with a gut load of pencils and slips. People who know what they want to sing (and know the drill), just come up fill out a slip, bypassing the books altogether.

My singer books are both artist and song title, but I also remove ALL dupes. I have a master listing of all the songs that I keep at my area in case someone wants to see what all I have, and I've had singers actually ask to do the DK or MM version of a song rather than the one I think is best... and more power to them!
Mine are dual columns so that saves on a lot of papers too!
But at just over 9K songs non duped, it's still a big darned book!

6 books 4 by artist. Thinking about bumping that up to 5. Save one song book for the reason Lonnie gave.
My books have no dupes in them and I've cleaned up most typos. Makes it easy to navigate thru. Just redid my books yesterday and I have 118 pages in the artist book at 164 in the song book. I buy my sheet protectors at $3.67 for a bag of 50 Avery. I bought all 8 packages that they had and it worked out exactly right. Since I leave my books at the venue, I pre stuff the pages and then insert them at the bar. Then I take the old pages home so I can save the shet protectors. Note the price, I couldn't find anything close to that online. I get mine at Wal Mart. My new laserjet prints both sides so saves me money on paper and time on stuffing.

I just get Staples brand in packs of 200
http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/ ... 051_SEARCH
Would break down to $3.50 per 50 pack. About the same.
Paper is actually cheap in compared with the toner in the printer that costs.... Even though the pages are printed double sided, same amount of toner is being used.

They were out of the 50s a couple weeks ago and charge 3.22 per 25. (wtf?) So I came home and looked online, found nothing close. I tried to do corporate express but didn't feel like becoming a member or whatever. I'll keep the Staples in mind although I don't want to pay for shipping?

But then you have tax. Shipping would actually be cheaper in my case as it's free.
