I very rarely have people bring their own disks to my shows as I usually have most everything people want to sing, (I have close to 9600 songs). I will get some out-of-towners that stop win with a little pack of cd's and then come up to me and say something like "I wasn't sure if you had this song but you do" and that would be the extent of it. I've gone to shows where the host sings damn near all night, and looking at the book it is clear that they bought only cd's that "they" wanted to sing something off from. I have found that buy having all the new releases as soon as they become available keeps people from bringing their own disks down to a bare minimum. Not only that, but regardless if it is big hit song "now", sooner or later (maybe 4 months down the line or so) people will want to sing it. I do 4 shows a week and each bar is different in the sense that 1 is an upscale sports bar (younger crowd), 1 is nothing but a country bar with their own Tack room, 1 is a little - and I mean little - blue collar working class rock bar, and the fouth is a sports bar/pool hall. They all will sing the "staple" karaoke songs - Black velvet, summer nights, picture, friends in low places etc. - but being able to offer the "newest" music for the people to sing has actually increased the crowd size, amount of singers, and total bar sales at 2 of the bars I work at.
I guess it all depends on where you are doing your shows, the area you live in and the clientel that the bar attracts. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with adding the newest releases as it it always better to be able to provide something that your competition may not have, and this gives you an advantage!!!
