For me lately I have been trying to start fresh with some of the newer 2008-09 songs, and when you haven't heard them more than once it is really hard.
Just so I know the Melody and transitions and timing, i will listen to the song several times. Then with the Lyrics in hand, from some website that carries lyrics, I will try my best to follow along using actual lyrics instead of making up what i think they said. I have done some Pretty fast lyric songs and, you have to know what is coming up because they fly by. For example I learned this lesson when doing Jason Mraz's "The Remedy." The verses are fast.
Another thing to look at would be Eye Contact. I can move around good while looking at the screen, but the only way to make eye contact with the crowd is to remove your eyes from the screen if only just for the Chorus.
But you know that is the point of doing Karaoke, you don't have to know the words, just when to say them. I try a lot of older songs blindly, just because I think it would be fun and I have heard it a lot, it really is the verse that gets you though if you don't remember that, you kind of draw a blank. I just start reading the words and use the Chords as a guide if I don't remember how it goes. I may draw a blank but the show must go on.

I refuse to count out the songs in my history that I have sung but it's in the hundreds. I know very few by heart. If that's bad, maybe we should go without a screen?

NOTHING WRONG WITH KNOWING JOURNEY SONGS!

Before I even thought about doing karaoke, I spent hours putting the lyrics for each and every song on my itunes. I have used it to cheat on "Don't Forget the Lyrics".

I just googled the song and the word "lyrics".

Some people can memorize songs in a very short period of time and I think it makes them think that it should be just that easy for everyone else. People who can sing well tend to think that singing should be easy for everyone to do because it comes easy to them. We are all born with different abilities. Some people are born with the abillity to sing AND the ability to memorize lyrics. I'm not one of them. I don't know if I could get through Happy Birthday without the monitor. ;c) :D

LOL BruceFan. My sister was very good at picking up lyrics when she was little. She was always singing along to my brothers Eagles or Elton John records and it made him mad because he wanted to listen to the records with no additional preteenybopper noise included! Whereas for me, I could never pick out the lyrics at all and I often misintrepreted the lyrics. In fact I didn't even try to learn the words because it was to far beyond me. But I loved the melodies and could remember them pretty well. Right now I'm not sure I have any songs memorized. There are probably a few I could learn pretty quickly if I had to but....yawn....call me lazy!

Are lyrics a male/female thing? We females are always talking about songs at work and the males always say they never pay attention to the words--"That's what that song is about?"

I don't know that there is a right way or wrong way, just a personal way. I can remember words better than tunes so by the time I have practiced a song a thousand times to get the tune, the words are pretty much ingrained.

I don't have a problem with who looks at the screen or who doesn't so much as where some venues put the screen. Ours is positioned so the singer is facing the wall instead of the audience and that has never made sense to me except any where else and people on the dance floor would trip over it. There are other screens around the venue but you need 20/20 to see them from the stage so most face the wall. When I go to places that have the screen in front of the singer it is so much easier to connect with the audience because at least you are looking in their direction even when you glance at the screen.

It's almost out of habit to look at a monitor even if I've done this song 100+ times. and usually I'm the guy looking for some rarely sung but good/new songs. And usually I'm with my blackberry to a lyrics website while looking at a songbook so I can remind myself if I can do that song.

The bands with monitors or lyric sheets are one of the things I look for at concerts. It's almost as if I'm seeing professional karaoke. I've seen Ozzy many times and he's known for this, a roadie has to run down to wipe the screen constantly due to Ozzy spraying the stage. His guitarist Zakk Wylde has a band Black Label Society. This guy has lamenated posterboards of the lyrics on the floor, but yet the guy can play every guitar riff perfectly without guitar tabulature. I'm still trying a BLS on beginner on Guitar Hero and not perfecting.

I've set up a duo and a trio group in my area using a floor video monitor (recessed in a speaker cabinet). I use winamp and a KeySpan presenter for total remote control (up to 100 feet or more). I have the playlist come up on the floor video monitor and you can control the song selection with the KeySpan. Select the song, hit play, and the graphic file shows up on top of the playlist. When the song finishes the playlist reappears (in any font size). It works better than you would ever expect. I also use the auto silence removal feature in winamp, so that the songs start and end with no delay.

Hello All,

I will do partial verses without looking but there are screens I have set up throughout the bar ... so I can walk aound and still sing.

I know parts of the songs but I have not memorized any ENTIRE song except one.

There are a number of songs I can do pretty much w/out look at the screen. I will glance up just to make sure I'm right on the lyrics and timing (e.g. when to start the verse or whatever).

Its very different (to me anyway) to sing along with an original vs. Karaoke (w/out the words).

I recently got drafted for a singing competition (not Karaoke). So, I've had to learn the song well enough to do it w/out the crutch of having a monitor. A few folks showed up to audition and were thrown off by not having the words. lol.

What's been odd is I really know the song, but I've caught myself singing the wrong verse at time... and then I'm saying WTF to myself. But I get up on stage, and it goes just fine.

On knowing the words bit-- it seems to me that its better (more important) to know the melody MORE than knowing the words with Karaoke. If the words are there, its one thing. But if you have no clue what the melody is, words aren't gonna help you one bit.
