I tend to respond something like this:

"As a professional sound tech, I have run sound for bands ranging from bluegrass gospel, to hardcore metal, and take pride in making everyone sound their best in keeping with the style they perform and the crowd/venue the are playing for. I offer you the same. You WILL sound great."

Then I take their request into account and see if I can make it work for them.

Like Lon, and others, mixing the house to my liking and the monitors to make the singers happy goes a LONG way toward making my promise remain one that I keep.

I would love the illustration as well. I would rather teach a new singer good mic habits then accommodate their bad habits and deal with it week after week.

Thanks for the info Lonnie, that will hope. I do still use the illustration. I still get a few singers that do it but now I just point to the picture instead of trying to explain to them during a song why not to do it.

I'm sure someone can come up with something better but this works for now.
