I knew a kj that kept a great show for several years.

His sound system was never great and declined with wear. At the end he was still attracting big crowds even when he was using a single speaker that occasionally cut out due to shorts in the wireing.

While the KJ had his faults, the main one being that he could not get allong with the bar owner, he kept the bar full of people eager to sing.

His replacement had a better sound system and song list, but crowds declined significantly.

Both KJs kept a similar rotation, the main difference was personality.

Kind of a funny story....there was a place I sang at once which I initially I really liked. The rotation was good, the sound was good, the beer flowed.... But then I noticed the rotation started doing strange things. My place in the rotation sometimes was here, sometimes it was there, and the sound started to suffer too. That nice full sound they had when the show was in its early days now was sometimes there, but sometimes it was missing, and this was with the same KJ and same equipment. One night the sound was really good, it was awesome! The KJ had this wild look in their eyes and they exclaimed, "The mic is HOT!" as if there was something magical about the mic that day, some random tweak of the dials that had brought the room into the "zone". I quit going there eventually, seeking out greener more consistent pastures that sounded better, and I heard later that the KJ had been let go, but awhile ago I was doing some research on the internet and looked the place up. I found some customer reviews on it and was reading through them. One review mentioned how they really liked this KJ's show, because they could always slip the KJ a nice tip and count on being moved to the front of the rotation!! Suddenly it all made sense--the oddball rotations, the sound with random hotspots... I don't know where the KJ is now. I kind of miss the KJ--a nice person, but I don't miss not knowing when it was my time to sing, or wondering what point on the map the sound system was going to be on a given night!

When I go to another show I don't expect to hear the same sound, collection, etc(I guess I've been spoiled) but what would make me leave is a host who has no personality or rude and crude, lazy, etc. Anything else I can live with.

I can't get past a rude host ... or one who really doesn't seem to care at all that a new singer has come to his/her show. Second to the rudeness is a host that is DRUNK or obviously impaired. Shows very little respect for venue and singers.

Actually the places we go back to are the ones that the staff and crowd is friendly and everybody is having fun. It takes a good host and staff that helps the host with requests etc. Over the years we have sang at places where the host was there for up to 8 years. Fair rotation decent system and good drink prices. It takes everybody to make a show.

Bad rotation would be my choice.

The overwhelming killer is rotation.

That is why you don't do special favors for WHINERS.

Kick them to the curb. I like whiners best when they are at someone elses show.

I have not had any winers yet.
My largest rotation has only been 8.

When I first started using Compuhost I really screwed up.
I would mark a singer with no further entry as inactive.
I assumed adding a new song for them would automaticly reactivate them.

Rotation went to (@$%&#!) and a few I have not seen since.
They didnt wine... Just never came back.

An inocent mistake but one I cant undo.

I still use slips and i can use them to keep track of my computer rotation. The slips laying there in front of me serve two purposes. One is to keep me honest and the other, so the singers can see exactly what i'm doing. A small typo can screw things up. I can double check myself against the slips in a second.

I run the rotation not the computer.

Yes I am doing that now.
It will eventually become a habit.
Simple RTFM I quote but dont didnt do myself.

Shame Compuhost could not give that option though.

Host Personality I can adopt to.
Limited Selection I can deal with by bringing my own discs.

Bad Sound -- it we're just talking about a poor mix or even a lack of a stage monitor I can deal, but there is one thing that will send me running faster than any other factor -- BLARING LOUD!

Unfair rotation will eventually send me packing forever after I figure out I'm getting cheated out of my turns to sing, BUT here's a little story to illustrate the one thing that will drive me out the door the fastest....

I went to a competitor's show the other night with a friend of mine -- no waitress so I had to order from the bar which was maybe 20' or so away from where the speakers were set up.

When the waitress was 6 feet away we could NOT hear each other and I have a fairly strong voice. After getting huddled up about a foot or so away and yelling she could hear me sufficiently to take our order for drinks and chicken fingers.

We went to the furthest table from the show and were able to hear each other if we raised our voices but it wasn't easy and we were less than 3 feet apart.

The female KJ was a very attractive, busty and nubile young blonde and she seemed to smile enough. The show was computerized and featured over 30,000 songs. The powered Mackies and the rest of the sound system were first rate except they didn't appear to be running a compressor --ouch!

None of the singers were bad at all -- but I found myself covering my ears with my hands on the high notes when this gal assayed Independence Day.

The KJ mixed fairly well except for the very first song we heard when we walked in and on those particular high notes. As far as I could tell she ran a fair rotation.

As soon as I finished wolfing down my chicken fingers, we hit the door and as my friend and I walked out into the blessed silence of the evening -- my ears were RINGING and that means permanent damage to your hearing folks,

I WON'T BE GOING BACK! My friend was awfully taken with the blonde, but I'm married so that's not enough motivation for me.

I guess when the song goes Let Freedom Rinnnngggg....they were talkin' about your ears! lol Actually I'm not sure I've been in the situation where it's too loud, but I feel your pain.

Hello All
#1 BAD ROTATION
#2 Crappy KJ (personality wise)

I can handle most anything else.

Poor rotation management. Period, the end. I don't use slips all that much. I can type so fast that by the time they say it, its up. Which is a plus... when other KJs cover my gigs all I hear are complaints the next week about how "that KJ made me fill out slips" lol.

I love it.

Personally, I'd rather not spend time cutting up song slips....
