I'm a believer that a TRUE 100% KARAOKE SHOW is going to be tough to maintain in this type of economy. At least on the Weekends. !

Actually like you also stated with other shows closing, it will 'strengthen' a 100% karaoke show as now these people that used to go to these now closed venues are looking for karaoke. Even though our overall crowds are not where they usually are, I have noticed an increase in 'non' regular singers lately - some with the very excuse that they are looking for a new place because their no longer offers it. It's a roller coaster ride, right now the cars are at the bottom of the hill & ready to reascend the next!

I agree ....survival of the fittest..lol I just hope the owners and managers don't mind waiting for the next ride .....

I say that every downhill run!

We've been 100% karaoke for the last 19 years and don't see any changes in the future. As for anyone else, who knows.

There are two other karaoke venues in close proximity to mine and we all are still up and going.

We took a hit when gas went over $4/ gallon last year but have rebounded off those lows and then some.

Fewer and fewer singers come to any one show. Crappyoke hosts sour their new venues (and singers) on karaoke.
Many Seattle-area bar owners I've spoken with turn to karaoke as a "last resort" to save their dying bar or one dead night. They are either not willing to spend the money on advertising and promotion or to commit to a minimum of 4-8 weeks to get the night going.

KaraokeJerry is also right that the "crappyoke" hosts are increasingly giving people a bad taste of karaoke in general. Poor sound and hosts who are frustrated singers or just plain rude are some of the reasons.

I had packed them in for three years. But in the same shopping center, two other places started karaoke. My crowd took a hit when singers checked out the other places. Then within a mile, two more places opened karaoke. I took another hit.
Yes, it might be more "oversaturation" than "recession". Especially for casual singers who are looking more for where the party is than a great show. No one wants to sing to an empty room, no matter how great the system sounds! Because times are tight, bar owners are cutting back. They can't offer specials AND pay for karaoke too.

The $75 pirates in our area are actually doing well as the small bar owners find them to be more affordable. People are going to the bar nearest their home and not driving to find a better show.
When karaoke was more of a novelty, those bars that offered it became "destinations" - it was normal to have to drive 5-10-15 miles to find a bar that had it. Now it's at every neighborhood bar whose prices are already set low. How many $2 and $3 beers do you need to sell to pay $150+ for a host and still make money? You have to have an s-load more people to cover the KJ. Some bars make as much profit with fewer people and the jukebox. Or they go with the $75 hosts.

Keep in mind that more of the "serious" singers are happy singing along to tracks on MySpace or Comcast Cable On-Demand and just having friends over to their house. But I predict there will be a shakeout of the industry as people get increasingly picky about their venues, the host and the sound. They won't mind heading to those bars who make the investment in their own system or bring in someone who themselves are a real entertainer and can keep the show fun for everyone. I swear, I see some hosts who can barely push play let alone say anything on the mic but, "How about a hand for [singer]. Now let's bring up [next singer]."

Didn't know about this until someone was mentioning doing their own karaoke for their wedding reception. They have their own parties at home all the time using IPOD karaoke. Seems to be a whole movement.

(in LA) The two karaoke co's I talk with consistantly say their business is contracting -- after years of expanding. Hustling for business, I'm finding that a lot of places would like karaoke, but it generally isn't generating enough revenue for the venue to go for it. In fact one bar said the $150 they would pay me is probably their profit for the night.

My nights/gigs are busy one week and lousy the next -- no consistancy. But I can say this -- and I attribute this to the economy -- where I averaged nearly $50/night in tips, last week I got $14 and a BIG crowd.

Afterward, the bartender told me that the patrons are drinking before they come out and buying very few drinks.

Yep, it's a recession indeed...

Hello All,

I'm sure I'm going to get some flack over this one but ...
NOW is the PERFECT time for you KJ's to show your bar what you are really worth.
Are you just some monkey behind the mic playing music or are you giving your bar VALUE with your service.

Do you promote the bars OTHER functions?
Do you advertise THEM on YOUR site?
Do you promote their bar to your client email list? You DO have a client list, don't you?
Do you help the bar market your services?

Recession? I choose not to participate in it. The 1st quarter of this year was my best my BEST FIRST QUARTER EVER! Why ? I planned it that way.

I set goals and marketing campaigns to insure that happened.

Now my 2nd and 3rd quarters were not as successful. Why? I did a bonehead move...planned on selling my house and moving to Florida so my marketing went there. Guess what, I got shows there ... BUT my house didn't sell. So my marketing is up to full swing again here in Pittsburgh and the leads are coming in.

Listen, there is MORE then enough money out there are more then enough bars willing to pay you what you are WORTH. Maybe that is the issue ... if you are only getting $75 a night, let me ask you ... is that what you are WORTH? If so, what are YOU going to do to change it ?
